Throughout training camp, the Chicago Bears have hosted a fierce battle at left tackle, with up to four competitors at times. But after the dust settled, a clear starting option emerged.

Amongst their roster cuts were tackles Jedrick Wills Jr. and Kiran Amegadjie. Braxton Jones is now poised to enter Week 1 protecting Caleb Williams' blindside, via Courtney Cronin of ESPN.
"Without making a formal announcement, the Bears handed Braxton Jones the starting left tackle job when they cut Kiran Amegadjie and Jedrick Wills Jr," Cronin said. "Neither player showed enough to factor into the team's tackle depth, a role that goes to Theo Benedet as Chicago's swing tackle."

Jones' status as LT1 isn't the most shocking . Wills was signed in free agency after missing the 2025 season while Amegadjie had appeared in just six games at the NFL. Jones, on the other hand, has appeared in 46 games for the Bears, starting 44 of them. Head coach Ben Johnson and company were clearly more comfortable giving him the reigns.

Still, Johnson has proven he isn't afraid to make changes if necessary. Depending on Ozzy Trapilo's continued development, one could come sooner rather than later.
Trapilo overtook Jones at left tackle late in the 2025 campaign. But a patellar tendon injury in the playoffs threatened his 2026 season. The tackle managed to deny the injury odds and has made his shocking return before Week 1. But Trapilo is still recovering from a serious injury, he will need time before he is fully 100 percent.
In the meantime, Jones will be at left tackle. The fact he earned the job out of camp is an impressive feat on its own. But if he is able to handle the role throughout the 2026 season, he'll become an even more valuable asset for the Bears.
