Chicago Bears cornerback Tyrique Stevenson , a former second-round pick, remains under the microscope, and his performance in Week 5 against the Green Bay Packers could be crucial. Stevenson has struggled at times this season, allowing several big plays in coverage. Although the Bears defense has thrived in recent weeks, he remains a concern. When Stevenson is playing well, he can be one of the most impactful cornerbacks on the field. However, when things go wrong, his struggles can be difficult to watch.
Defensive coordinator Dennis Allen recently spoke to the media and emphasized what his scheme demands: cornerbacks cannot afford to make mistakes. He compared the position to a high-risk job that someone might perform high above the Chicago skyline.
"Well listen, the number one thing I would tell all of you in this scheme, it's like being a window washer on a high-rise building. You can't make mistakes or you can't have a bad day because bad things really happen. So, that's part of the business in this." Allen said.
Stevenson Continues to Deliver Hot-and-Cold Performances

Stevenson's first three seasons with the Bears have produced mixed results. However, he showed signs of progress in 2025, allowing just one touchdown in coverage and earning a career-high 66.2 PFF grade . While that grade wasn't spectacular, and PFF grades aren't foolproof, it offered reason to believe he could take another step forward.
Unfortunately, Stevenson hasn't gotten off to a strong start in 2026, despite Chicago's 3-1 record.
Through four games, he has allowed 10 receptions for 203 yards and three touchdowns while surrendering a 145.8 passer rating when targeted . He is on pace to set career highs in yards and touchdowns allowed, as well as passer rating surrendered.
Those numbers raise an important question for Bears fans: Could Stevenson lose his starting job in Week 5 if the Packers repeatedly exploit him in coverage?

Stevenson faces one of the toughest jobs in the NFL, and his counterpart on the other side of Chicago's secondary hasn't exactly enjoyed a statistically impressive start, either. Still, the Bears' defensive success could work in Stevenson's favor. Chicago has allowed just 9.3 points per game over the past three weeks.
Cornerback play can be a roller coaster, with struggles potentially leading to a reduced role while consistent performances can establish a player as a reliable starter. Allen understands that even the best cornerbacks can experience difficult stretches, though.
"You know, we put those guys out there and give them a tough job. All of the great ones, OK, every one of them have been beaten at some point in time. And really it's about go on to the next play, line up again, play with the same confidence, aggression, and it's just, I mean, it's a part of the business." Allen said.
Stevenson will face a significant challenge against Green Bay receivers such as Matthew Golden and Christian Watson . Quarterback Jordan Love could look to attack him early and often, especially with the Packers' struggling rushing attack offering little support.
If Stevenson continues to surrender big plays, the Bears could eventually consider making a change. However, a strong performance against Green Bay would help quiet concerns and give him momentum heading into the next stretch of the season.
Can Stevenson turn his season around in Week 5, or will the Packers expose his struggles in coverage?
