Head Coach Ben Johnson made it clear that no one gets a free pass in Chicago, not even the stars. The Bears just made a massive move to bring in All-Pro defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons, and the expectation is instant impact. According to Heavy.com , Johnson and General Manager Ryan Poles talk every single day to stay aligned on roster decisions. That constant communication led to a huge trade for Simmons, sending out 2027 and 2028 first-round picks plus a 2027 fourth-rounder to get him.
Zero Excuses for the Stars
While the front office spends big on Simmons, the coaching staff expects everyone else to bring their best work immediately. Johnson told reporters that starting spots are earned through performance, not tenure. He pointed to defensive end Daniel Hardy as the prime example of a player who earned his snaps by producing. This creates a stark reality for cornerback Jaylon Johnson, who is facing heat for recent tackling struggles. The Pro Bowler admitted he has no answers for his poor play. "There's nothing that I can say as far as an excuse, a rhyme or reason." When reporters inquired about his tackling problems, Jaylon Johnson stated, "I've just got to get it done."

The pressure is on because the team is about to face its toughest test yet. On Monday night, the Bears travel to Seattle to play the Seahawks at Lumen Field. Jaylon Johnson must cover Jaxon Smith-Njigba, who leads the entire NFL in receiving yards entering Week 8. It is a nightmare matchup for a defender who already leads the team in missed tackles this season. Advanced metrics show opponents throw for a passer rating well over 100 when he is on the field. That is not the level of play a player on a four-year, $76 million extension should be showing.
Legends Weigh In
Former Bears greats are not holding back their criticism either. Charles "Peanut" Tillman, a legendary cornerback himself, urged Jaylon Johnson to return to the grind that made him an All-Pro in the first place. "If working hard and staying late and watching film… that's what got you to that All-Pro status, maybe we need to get back to that," Tillman advised. When asked about those comments, Jaylon Johnson kept his response short and blunt: "I don't have anything to say to that."
The message from the coaching staff is simple: the trade for Simmons raises the standard for the entire defense. If the new star is there to dictate terms, the rest of the unit must elevate their game to match him. Olin Kreutz, a former center, even went on social media to ask why defensive players do not face the same benching rules as offensive players who fumble. The clock is ticking for Jaylon Johnson to prove he belongs on the field. He has to fix his angles and technique before Monday night, or the roster moves will start looking less like a plan and more like a warning.
Ben Johnson has built a culture where effort and results matter more than a big name or a big contract.
