For the price of a late-round draft pick swap, the Pittsburgh Steelers were able to pair Michael Pittman Jr. with DK Metcalf , creating maybe the best receiver duo the franchise has seen since Ben Roethlisberger ’s days at quarterback.

Roethlisberger, who retired after the 2021 season, couldn’t believe new head coach Mike McCarthy and general manager Omar Khan were able to pry Pittman from the Indianapolis Colts.

“When I saw that, I’m like, ‘Is this real? How did Indy let him go?'” Roethlisberger said Tuesday on his “Footbahlin” podcast. “And so, to me, that is gigantic. Because I think now (with) DK, him and, obviously, you still have Roman Wilson , who we, on this show believe that he’s a really good talent, someone they need to infuse more in there. … Man, that’s a big one. I know Aaron’s gotta be happy.”

Roethlisberger, of course, was referring to veteran signal-caller Aaron Rodgers , who’s still deciding whether he wants to return for a second season in black and gold. Pittman angled his way to the Steel City in part because he’d have a chance to play with the four-time Associated Press NFL MVP.

“Whenever you have a chance to play with a Hall of Fame quarterback, you take that,” Pittman said during his introductory press conference last week.

Pittman, who’s listed at 6-foot-4 and 223 pounds, had 80 catches for 784 yards and seven touchdowns last season. The Colts opted to pay Alec Pierce an expensive contract, which undoubtedly played a part in them sending Pittman off.
