Ben Shelton is heading back to tennis's biggest season-ending showdown, and his latest achievement highlights just how far the American star has come. His impressive 2026 campaign has earned him another shot at glory.
The 24-year-old has secured qualification for the ATP Finals in Turin, Italy, marking his second consecutive appearance. After delivering several standout performances this season, Shelton has proved he belongs among the sport's elite.

However, qualifying is only the beginning. With the world's top players preparing for one final battle, Shelton faces a major opportunity to test his progress, challenge established champions, and end his season with a statement.
Who else is joining him in Italy
Shelton became the third player to officially qualify. He joins Alexander Zverev and Carlos Alcaraz in the eight-player field. The tournament runs from November 15 to 22 in Turin. Five singles spots remain open.
Defending champion Jannik Sinner is sidelined by a knee injury until 2027. He will not play in Turin. His absence opens the door wide for others to chase the big title in Turin this November.

The finals use a group stage before the semifinals and the final. Every match matters in that setup. One slow start can wreck a week, so Shelton wants to hit the ground running right away.
How the race to Turin unfolded
Shelton has collected 4,480 points in the PIF ATP Live Race To Turin, placing him fourth in the race. He also holds a career-high No. 4 position in the ATP Rankings.
His record this season stands at 40-17, a win rate of about 70.2%. That consistency helped him secure another place among the eight players heading to Turin.
Shelton was born on Oct. 9, 2002, in Atlanta. He turned 24 just 9 days before his ATP Finals spot became official on Oct. 18.

Four titles powered his breakout season
Shelton won four tour titles this season. Only Jannik Sinner won more with six. The American claimed trophies in Munich and Dallas, plus Stuttgart and Montreal. That puts him among the elite names on tour.

Munich and Dallas were ATP 500 events. Stuttgart came on grass. Those wins showed that his big serve and lefty forehand travel well across different surfaces and conditions all year long. That is rare versatility.
That serve is a real weapon. He served about 142 miles per hour in the Montreal final and did not give up a break point. It is a big reason his title count keeps growing.
Montreal became his biggest statement win
Shelton defended his Canadian crown in August without dropping a set. He beat fellow American Brandon Nakashima 6-3, 7-6(4) in the final. He became the fourth man this century to successfully defend the Canadian title, joining Andy Murray, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal.

Before Montreal, Shelton had endured several early exits at Masters 1000 events in 2026. His title run in Canada reversed that trend and provided a major boost to his season.
In the final, he converted 2 of 4 break chances, a 50% conversion rate, while Nakashima did not earn a single break point on Shelton's serve.
Little-known fact: Shelton made his first trip outside the United States during the 2023 Australian summer, when he was 20. He competed in Adelaide and Auckland before making his Australian Open debut in Melbourne.
A historic run to the US Open final
In September, Shelton beat close friend Frances Tiafoe in four sets to reach his first Grand Slam final. He lost the opening set but stayed calm and took full control of the match from there.

That win made him the first Black American man in a US Open singles final since Arthur Ashe in 1972. History followed him into the final weekend in New York. That wait lasted 54 years.
Shelton is also the fourth man born in the 2000s to reach a Grand Slam final. That is a small club. He now clearly belongs in it and has the strong results to prove it.

The family behind the rising star
His father, Bryan Shelton, coaches him full time. Bryan left his college coaching job to travel the tour with his son. That choice shows just how much the whole family believes in this long journey.
Bryan once ranked inside the world's top 60 as a player. He later led Georgia Tech to a women's national title back in 2007. In 2021, he guided Florida to its first men's national title.

Bryan became the first coach ever to win Division I national team titles in both men's and women's tennis. Ben helped clinch that 2021 men's title as a true freshman.
Beating Alcaraz and battling Zverev
Earlier in the event, Shelton knocked out defending champion Carlos Alcaraz in a five-set quarterfinal. The match ended at 3:33 a.m., the latest finish in US Open history.
Alexander Zverev beat Shelton 6-3, 7-6(2), 5-7, 6-2 in the final on Sunday. Shelton claimed the third set, but Zverev responded in the fourth to secure the title.
The loss kept a long American drought alive. No U.S. man has won a Grand Slam singles title since Andy Roddick captured the 2003 US Open. Shelton, born Oct. 9, 2002, was not yet 1 year old when Roddick won that title.

Learning from a winless 2025 debut
Shelton went winless on his Finals debut last year. He lost all three round-robin matches. Debuts rarely go smoothly, and the field in Turin gives nobody an easy night. That week taught him plenty.
This time he arrives as a Grand Slam finalist with a Masters title on his shelf. That confidence should help a lot. He also opened his Shanghai run by beating Daniel Altmaier in straight sets.
Turin gives him a fresh chance to turn that lesson into wins. A strong group stage could change the tone of his entire fall. Fans around the world will be watching very closely in November.
