NFL fans are calling for Sam Darnold 's starting quarterback job after the Seattle Seahawks suffered a frustrating 33-31 loss at the Washington Commanders on Sunday. The Seahawks entered the game as the defending Super Bowl champions and had won 12 straight games, but a series of costly mistakes ended that run.
Seattle (2-1) moved the ball well for most of the afternoon, but the offense repeatedly failed to capitalize. The Seahawks turned the ball over three times.
Sam Darnold had an impressive return from injury, throwing for 379 yards and four touchdowns. However, his late pick-6 proved extremely costly.
With just over four minutes remaining, Kain Medrano intercepted Darnold and returned it for a touchdown, giving Washington (1-2) a 33-24 lead. Fans on social media believe that Drew Lock would be the better starting QB option for Seattle over Darnold.
"The Seahawks need to bench Sam Darnold ASAP!! This is embarrassing," a fan wrote.
"START DREW LOCK," a fan wrote.
"Hawks looked Lazy and unprepared. McDonald didn't do his job getting this team ready for game day," a fan wrote.
"Sam Darnold is not clutch. Seahawks are better with lock," a fan wrote.
"Drew Lock would never," a fan wrote.
"Maybe Drew Lock should have remained the starter. The Seahawks, led by Sam Darnold, are getting absolutely destroyed by the Commanders horrible defense. Wow. Unbelievable," a fan wrote.
Seattle managed to cut the deficit to two points late in the fourth quarter, but the defense could not get the ball back. While there's genuine frustration among Seahawks fans over the loss, Seattle still sits at 2-1.
It will return home next week for a matchup against the Chargers (0-3) at Lumen Field on Sunday.
Seahawks HC Praised the Washington Commanders
Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald graciously accepted the defeat during his postgame news conference. Macdonald said the Commanders were the better team, as they followed the basics that the Seahawks failed to execute.
"What wins games is great situational football and taking care of the rock and playing complementary football and stacking plays. And we didn't do those things today, and they did. So, credit to them," he said , according to Curtis Crabtree of Fox 13 Seattle.
Macdonald also praised his quarterback and the team's offense, saying that they moved the ball really well. However, he also saw some room for improvement, which will likely be addressed before the Chargers game.
