Not much time separates the Cincinnati Bengals from final cuts.
The Bengals will need to trim the roster to 53 players over the weekend. Thanks to some surprise breakout performances and super-competitive spots on the depth chart , it could be a tougher process than normal for the club.
Good news: The Bengals can seek to trade players they might otherwise cut. Those at the controls have been pretty good about trades this time of year, too, with the BJ Hill-Billy Price deal coming to mind.
Here's a look at some of the top Bengals trade candidates they might consider moving to make the final cuts process easier.
Bengals trade candidates before final cuts
WR Charlie Jones
A return specialist and a dangerous one when available, Charlie Jones is losing out on the numbers game this summer. The Bengals claimed Ke'Shawn Williams last year to compete at the spot. Summer breakout Dohnte Meyers can help there, too, in addition to being much more lethal in the base offense. If the Bengals can find a team that specifically needs a return specialist, they might be able to get something for his departure.
WR Mitchell Tinsley
Elsewhere at wideout, Mitchell Tinsley has reminded some fans of Marvin Jones with his flashes at times. But again, the numbers game. He's stuck fighting for a fifth or sixth spot behind Ja'Marr Chase, Tee Higgins, Andrei Iosivas and Colbie Young. Those back-end spots need to excel on special teams, too. Tinsley is more of a base-offense guy who might have some appeal to teams in need.
TE Tanner Hudson
There's a numbers game at tight end, too. Mike Gesicki, Drew Sample and Erick All are locks. If they only roster four, or stretch it to five, rookie Jack Endries has impressed and they really like Cam Grandy. Hudson, now 31 years old, is a solid all-around player, which will appeal to other teams for his ability to help right away.
CB Josh Newton
A fifth-round pick once thought of being a possible starter down the road, Josh Newton has again looked great in practice reps until the game lights come on. If other teams think he might excel in their system, the Bengals might entertain moving him instead of a cut. They have starters with Dax Hill, DJ Turner and Jalen Davis, plus roster-lock depth with rookie Tacario Davis and DJ Ivey. That's five, plus solid depth or upside names like Ja'Sir Taylor and Bralyn Lux.
DT Kris Jenkins
The Bengals probably don't want to give up on Kris Jenkins, a second-round investment from 2024. But that same draft status is what might mean they can still sell somewhat high on the trade block. They certainly sent a message to Jenkins with the additions of Dexter Lawrence and Jonathan Allen to help out BJ Hill and TJ Slaton. With rookie Landon Robinson making a final roster push too, Jenkins' possible upside in the eyes of other teams might have the Bengals accepting an offer.
