The high school bowling season has reached its final stages, with the state tournament days away for Division II and a week beyond that for Division I.
Eleven area players, most of whom remain alive in their hopes for a state championship, were featured in a poll to determine the central Ohio high school regular season boys bowler of the year .
All of the votes from Dispatch readers are in, and the winner is Big Walnut's Mason Woodward.
The sophomore averaged 232.6 pins per game in the regular season, second in the Central Ohio High School Bowling Conference and a 23.5-pin improvement from his freshman season.
Woodward has a high game of 299, high two-game series of 538 and 11 games of 250 or better.
He continued that into the postseason, bowling a 637 three-game series to tie for eighth place in the Division I sectional at HP Lanes and earn an individual berth to district Feb. 24 at the same facility.
"Mason has had an exceptional season," Big Walnut coach Conner Leidtke said. "I tell all my players that the most important thing in bowling is consistency, and that's what [Woodward] does best. He sticks to the same pre-shot routine and his mechanics are always sound. He has put in the work and it shows on the lanes."
With 31.19% of the vote, Woodward came in well ahead of the No. 2 finisher, Groveport senior Tidus Schieser (17.59%).
They were followed by St. Charles' Miles Gordon (12.73%), Reynoldsburg's Quinn Dean (10.51%), Gahanna Lincoln's Mitchell Genson (6.77%), Mount Vernon's Griffin Beach (5.49%), Hilliard Darby's Isaac Fellner (4.8%), Teays Valley's Sam Rodgers (4.71%), Olentangy Berlin's Cayden Cherry (3.93%), Jonathan Alder's Braden Warren (1.9%) and East Knox's Blake Calhoon (0.37%).
All of these bowlers are candidates to make our All-Metro boys bowling team, which will be revealed in March and honored during the Central Ohio High School Sports Awards on June 22 at Upper Arlington High School.
