The Los Angeles Lakers moved aggressively to reshape their roster after LeBron James' departure, but their flurry of offseason moves quickly became the target of criticism from longtime Boston Celtics fan and NBA analyst Bill Simmons .

After acquiring Walker Kessler from the Utah Jazz in a sign-and-trade and signing free agents Sandro Mamukelashvili, Quentin Grimes and Collin Sexton during the opening day of free agency, the Lakers transformed what had appeared to be a disappointing start to the offseason into one of the league's busiest first days on the market.
Not everyone was impressed.
Simmons took to X, formerly known as Twitter, shortly after the Lakers completed their spending spree, first posting a photo of the Minneapolis Lakers featuring Hall of Famer George Mikan and several teammates without adding any additional commentary.
He later followed with a more direct jab at the franchise and the media's expected reaction to the moves.

"Which media member is gonna grab the 'Amazing job by the Lakers to pivot so quickly with all of these splashy signings after LeBron stunned them yesterday by abruptly leaving the franchise' corner? It's sitting right there!"
The comments reflected Simmons' skepticism that the Lakers deserved widespread praise for their response after James informed the organization he would continue his career elsewhere.
Los Angeles nevertheless entered free agency with a clear objective of surrounding franchise cornerstone Luka Doncic with a deeper supporting cast.
Lakers' aggressive roster overhaul draws Bill Simmons' skepticism
The front office first addressed its most significant need by landing Kessler, one of the NBA's top young defensive centers. To complete the deal, the Lakers reportedly sent unprotected first-round picks in 2031 and 2033, along with first-round pick swaps in 2028 and 2030, to Utah.

The Lakers then added Mamukelashvili on a four-year contract, giving the roster another frontcourt player capable of stretching the floor. Grimes followed on a four-year deal after emerging as one of the more sought-after two-way guards in free agency.
Los Angeles also signed Sexton to bolster its backcourt rotation with another proven scorer and playmaker.
Those additions came after weeks of reports linking the Lakers to Kessler, Mamukelashvili and Grimes, making the trio's arrival less surprising than the timing of James' departure.
Whether the Lakers' aggressive offseason ultimately proves successful remains to be seen. Simmons, however, made it clear he was not ready to celebrate the organization's rapid turnaround, instead poking fun at what he anticipated would become a favorable narrative surrounding Los Angeles' busy start to free agency.
