Buffalo Bills fired former head coach Sean McDermott and signed their offensive coordinator Joe Brady as their head coach in January 2026. It hasn't been long since Brady took over but comparisons are already being drawn.
Bills' left tackle Dion Dawsins talked about both the coaches and cleared that things are going "smoother" with Joe Brady than it did with Sean McDermott.
Bills left tackle compares Joe Brady with former HC Sean McDermott
Buffalo Bills left tackle Dion Dawkins has drawn a clear contrast between first-year head coach Joe Brady and former head coach Sean McDermott, based on how each connects with players. On The Rich Eisen Show, Dawkins sided with the newly appointed Joe Brady for how well he has been connecting with the players.

"Like, you'll get lost. And as a coach, if you can't connect with your players, you know, there's, like, that's a huge disconnect," Dawkins said . "I'm not saying that, you know, McDermott didn't know how to deal with that, but it's just some things are like it just comes off smoother, right?" He added.
Wide receiver Keon Coleman provides the main real-world example behind Dion Dawkins' comments comparing Joe Brady and Sean McDermott. Last year, Sean McDermott benched Coleman for the Bills' game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after the young wide receiver arrived late to a team meeting.
Under new head coach Joe Brady in 2026, Coleman has responded with strong early production. He caught all six of his targets for 63 yards against the Detroit Lions in Week 2 and scored a 12-yard touchdown from Josh Allen in a 33-30 win over the Las Vegas Raiders.
Sean McDermott's tenure ended in January 2026 after the Bills' playoff overtime loss to the Denver Broncos. Owner Terry Pegula sought a new direction, and the team soon named Joe Brady head coach on a five-year contract.
Bills wanted structural change and signed Joe Brady
The Buffalo Bills fired head coach Sean McDermott on January 19, 2026, two days after a 33-30 overtime loss to the Denver Broncos in the AFC Divisional Round. Owner Terry Pegula made the decision almost immediately after the game.
"Sean has done an [admirable] job of leading our football team for the past nine seasons," Pegula announced . "But I feel we are in need of a new structure within our leadership to give this organization the best opportunity to take our team to the next level. We owe that to our players and to Bills Mafia."
Roughly a week later, the Bills promoted offensive coordinator Joe Brady to head coach on a five-year contract. Brady, then 36 and the NFL's youngest active head coach, had served as the team's play-caller since late 2023. Under him the offense ranked among the league's best, and he helped Allen win NFL MVP in 2024.
