The Buffalo Bills made some tough choices on roster cutdown day . Buffalo parted ways with several talented players in order to trim their roster down to 53 players. Fortunately, the Bills were able to reunite with one veteran defensive player after releasing him just one day earlier.

The Bills are signing veteran safety Geno Stone to their practice squad, per NFL insider Jordan Schultz.
Buffalo released Stone on Sunday as part of their final roster cutdowns. But now they reunite with Stone after giving him a chance to test the open market. The Bills originally signed Stone to a one-year deal during NFL free agency.

Schultz added that Buffalo expects Stone to be on the active roster on game day despite being on the practice squad.
Stone, a former seventh-round pick out of Iowa, established himself as a reliable safety during the 2021 season. He spent three seasons in Baltimore 's secondary, only missing two games over that stretch. Stone stayed in the AFC North, joining the Bengals for the past two seasons. He was a big part of Cincinnati 's secondary in 2025, logging 104 total tackles with two sacks, two interceptions, and four passes defensed.

It is interesting to hear that Buffalo plans to have Stone on the active roster for game days. The Bills already have Cole Bishop and Damar Hamlin as their starting safeties, with C.J. Gardner-Johnson able to share snaps when he's not in the slot. Perhaps the Bills simply want to have as much depth as possible at safety.
Buffalo has huge expectations for the 2026 season, so it makes sense to leave nothing to chance. Bringing Stone back in makes Buffalo's secondary depth even better ahead of a crucial "Super Bowl or bust" campaign.
The Bills open the regular season with a road game against the Texans. That blockbuster AFC matchup kicks off at 1 p.m. ET from NRG Stadium in Houston .
