Maxwell Hairston was supposed to help solve the Buffalo Bills' cornerback questions. Six weeks in, the 2025 first-round pick has lost playing time , and Bleacher Report's Alex Kay named Marshon Lattimore as a free agent who could help Buffalo fix the position.
The Bills already made one move, bringing back Tre'Davious White, who is signing with the practice squad before joining the active roster. Buffalo is 5-1 and heading into its bye , which is the right time to decide whether White is enough.
The Bills' pass defense numbers
Buffalo is allowing 285.8 passing yards a game, which ranks 31st in the league, and has just three interceptions. The Raiders threw for 313 yards in Sunday's 33-30 win in Las Vegas, and the Bills didn't record a sack. Buffalo still won, but it needed a late stop to hold on, and that's been the pattern in a season where Josh Allen and the offense have covered for the defense more than once.
Hairston played 26 snaps in that game and finished with a 53.6 coverage grade, according to PFF. Davison Igbinosun had a 45.9 coverage grade on 42 snaps. Christian Benford held up, allowing three catches on eight targets, but the other side of the field has been a problem all season, and the Bills have been linked to cornerback help as Hairston's struggles have piled up.
What Marshon Lattimore would bring
Lattimore made four Pro Bowls with the New Orleans Saints between 2017 and 2021. Injuries have slowed him since, and he tore his ACL nearly a year ago with the Washington Commanders after recording 27 tackles, seven passes defensed and an interception in nine games.
At 30, he isn't the same athlete, but he still has the size to play press coverage. If his knee checks out, the Bills can sign him for little more than a roster spot and give him the bye to get up to speed. Even as a rotational corner, he'd give the Bills a veteran option that doesn't exist on the roster right now. With C.J. Gardner-Johnson's ejection last week another reminder of how thin this secondary is, it's worth a workout.
