- Bills trade deadline candidate: Colts safety Cam Bynum
Let's keep the safety carousel spinning for ideas for the Buffalo Bills ahead of this year's NFL trade deadline.
Taking center stage today is Colts safety Cam Bynum, a six-year steady veteran with over 5,000 career snaps on his NFL resume (counting playoffs) who resides on an Indianapolis team that appears to clearly be in fire-sale mode.

This article is the seventh in the trade-candidate series I plan to sprinkle onto the site until the actual trade deadline until November 10, which is 13 days from now, and lands after Week 9.
Past installments in this series:
Derwin James , Brian Thomas Jr. Jessie Bates , Tariq Woolen , Amani Hooker , Antoine Winfield Jr.
Age:28
After a decorated career at cornerback for the University of California-Berkeley, Bynum was a fourth-round pick by the Vikings 2021. Minnesota's coaching staff at the time immediately transitioned Bynum to safety, and he's played that position ever since in the NFL.
Bynum moved into a full-time role by his second season, when he played 100% — yes, 100% — of the Vikings regular-season defensive snaps. During that year, he racked up 81 tackles, defended six passes, and a pair on interceptions.

In 2023, Bynum's defensive snap percentage dipped to… 99.2%, and he was ubiquitous. That season, he made 137 tackles, knocked away nine passes, and snagged two more picks.
The following season Bynum parlayed a three-pick, 96-tackle campaign into a four-year, $60 million deal that featured $26M guaranteed with the Colts. In 24 games in Indianapolis, Bynum has five picks and 10 pass breakups along with averaging 4.45 tackles per contest.
2026 snap splits
Box:24.8%
Free safety:60.6%
Slot corner:9.3%
Wide corner:4.4%
*Bynum has played three snaps — of 430 total snaps — along the defensive line to date as well.

Bynum has very much settled in as a true free safety. Despite aligning relatively far away from the football, he's maintained high tackling numbers on a yearly basis.
How he'd fit with Bills
Given that the Bills might be in need of an every-down free safety — if we are to expect that C.J. Gardner-Johnson's role will be diminished post-suspension — Bynum is the type of safety who'd fit exquisitely into the Bills defense.
As a former cornerback, he boasts plus ball skills, and maybe most importantly given Gardner-Johnson's struggles, Bynum is a spectacular tackler.
His career missed tackle rate is 8.8% — anything below 10% is darn good for a defensive back. He's been a staple of durability too. Bynum has three missed games in his NFL career to date, and they all came in his rookie season back in 2021.

Financial obligation for Bills to trade for him
2026 salary:$10M
If the Bills trade for Bynum after Week 9, they'd be on the hook for $5M in prorated 2026 base salary. He has roster bonuses that would add to $270k if he's on the field for all nine regular-season contests in 2026.
Over the next two seasons, Bynum's base salaries are $13.4M and $14.4M but are not guaranteed.
Re-doing Bynum's deal if they traded for him would be most likely course of action for Buffalo, swapping large base salaries for future guaranteed money.
Projected cost to acquire
Using Syndicate32.com's trade machine , and adding the "fire sale" stipulation to the assessment, the projected cost to trade for Bynm, is an early Round 3 pick in 2027.

That feels about little high, especially considering the Colts are clearly looking to reset their roster. He's a stable, high-volume safety but can be susceptible in coverage at times.
Should the Bills trade for Cam Bynum?
It feels like Bynum lands right in the sweet spot for what the Bills need and would be willing to spend draft-pick wise to acquire a defender at the deadline.
He's not a superstar by any stretch.
Bynum would represent a respectable floor at free safety along with some semblance of upside. Overall, the Bills would know precisely what they'd be getting from him on a game-to-game basis, which is kinda-sorta the opposite of the Gardner-Johnson experience thus far.

I don't think I'd send a Round 3 pick for Bynum, though. If Indianapolis would be willing to part with him for one of Buffalo's fourth-round selections, this is a trade I believe the Bills should very much consider.
