It was a surprise when the Buffalo Bills fired head coach Sean McDermott Monday. After all, he'd racked up more wins in nine seasons than the eight coaches before him had in the previous 16 years combined . But after failing to advance out of a Kansas City Chiefs-less AFC side of the playoff bracket and with a wealth of proven veterans suddenly available , Buffalo opted for a change.
The switch was not well-received internally, if you ask 11-year NFL veteran and longtime Bill Jordan Phillips. The beefy defensive tackle took to social media Monday to express his displeasure.
"This [expletive] here is so stupid honestly sickening. The best coach I've ever been around" wrote the 10-year veteran in an Instagram story .
McDermott came to Buffalo with a well-earned reputation as a defensive tactician after spending several years as a coordinator before getting his promotion in western New York. While Josh Allen 's offense may have been flashier, the head coach strung together multiple top-five defenses before personnel changes contributed to a backslide from great to good the last two seasons.
Phillips wasn't the only unhappy Bills defender. Safety Damar Hamlin clocked in with a trio of broken heart emojis on Twitter.
Phillips is one of many key defensive veterans about to hit free agency, alongside players like Matt Milano , Tre'Davious White, Joey Bosa , Jordan Poyer and A.J. Epenesa . They'll have their opportunity to make a statement without having to turn to social media when they negotiate with the Bills this offseason.
