The Chicago Blackhawks have locked up their blueline of the future. The Blackhawks recently made a trade for Bowen Byram , acquiring him from the Buffalo Sabres .
Now, Byram is getting a new deal from the Blackhawks, according to Pierre LeBrun of TSN and The Athletic.
Byram will be getting a six-year extension with an AAV of $12.5 million.
Byram was the fourth overall selection of the Colorado Avalanche in the 2019 NHL Draft. He first broke into the NHL with the Avs in 2020-21, but would never find consistency with the team. During the 2023-24 campaign, he was shipped to the Sabres. Then, last summer, he got a new contract from the Sabres. That was a two-year deal worth $12.5 million. The AAV of $6.25 million was already a massive jump from his prior AAV of $3.85 million. Now, he is doubling his salary again, starting in 2027-28.
Currently, his AAV of $12.5 million, set to begin next season, will be the highest AAV of a defensive player in the NHL, according to Spotrac. It is $1.5 million more than the current deals for Erik Karlsson of the Pittsburgh Penguins, Rasmus Dahlin of the Sabres, and Drew Doughty of the Los Angeles Kings .
Still, Cale Makar is working on a new contract with the Avalanche that is likely to be worth well more than the deal that is worth $12.5 million in AAV for Bryam. Both Makar and Byram were set to hit NHL Free Agency in the summer of 2027.
