We are less than two weeks away from pitchers and catchers reporting for the start of Spring Training. The Minnesota Twins kick off Grapefruit League action on February 21 . Plenty of players have already descended upon Fort Myers though.
Among them is breakout rookie Luke Keaschall . After his bat carried him to the big leagues last year, it's his arm that will get the focus in 2026. Slow-played defensively after undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2024 , Keaschall is on track to have an expanded role this year.
Outfield on the table for MN Twins Luke Keaschall
A second round pick by the Minnesota Twins during the 2023 Major League Baseball draft, Luke Keaschall rose the prospect ranks . He logged 49 games in the big leagues last season, but was only at second base. Still healing from his Tommy John surgery, and then throwing a broken forearm into the equation, the outfield was never on the table.

An offseason thumb surgery required more time on the shelf, but his arm is ready to rock. With a dynamic defensive skillset, he'll get plenty of reps in the outfield.

Keaschall played all 41 games he appeared in the field at second base last year. He also operated as Rocco Baldelli's designated hitter eight time.
His .302/.382/.445 batting average earned him a ninth place finish for Rookie of the Year honors . He also logged 14 doubles, and swiped 14 bags, of which his start set Major League Baseball history .
Second base is not typically a demanding defensive position. Keaschall was there because he can compete on the dirt, and it's a spot where arm strength isn't a premium. He posted 1 DRS (defensive runs saved) but was worth -2 OAA (outs above average) and -1 FRV (future run value). His arm strength ranked in just the sixth-percentile.
Luke Keaschall gives the MN Twins options
Right now it should be expected that new manager Derek Shelton will use Keaschall as his Opening Day second baseman. He can also contribute in center and left field. His 28.7 feet per second sprint speed is in the 85th percentile, and Keaschall logged plenty of innings in the grass on the farm and during college.

Minnesota's corner outfield spots are played by lumbering lefties, or a utility type in Austin Martin . James Outman , acquired from the Dodgers for Brock Stewart , is the only real backup option for Byron Buxton in center. Keaschall bats right-handed and has the athleticism to play both outfield spots where arm strength isn't necessarily required.
How the Minnesota Twins deploy him this season will be interesting to watch. The fact that he's healthy, and presents them a multitude of options, makes him one of the more valuable players on the roster.
