Denton Mateychuk won't play for the Blue Jackets on Jan. 13 against the Calgary Flames in new coach Rick Bowness' debut at Nationwide Arena.
Mateychuk, who has been playing top defensive minutes as Zach Werenski 's partner, skated just one shift in the Blue Jackets' 3-2 overtime victory Jan. 11 at Utah after being driven into the boards from behind by Brandon Tanev .
Blue Jackets president/general manager Don Waddell said Mateychuk had an upper-body injury that caused "a tingling in his arm," checked out by a physician Jan. 12 in Columbus and will get a second opinion Jan. 13 before a return timeline is issued.
"Assuming everything goes well today, I don't think it's going to be too long," Waddell said.
Mateychuk has eight goals, 13 assists and 21 points in 44 games during his second NHL season, doubling his goal output and nearly doubling his scoring line of 4-9-13 in 45 games last season as a rookie. Look for Jake Christiansen to draw back into the Blue Jackets' defensive pairings against the Flames, likely skating on the third pairing.
