Blue Jays Announce Trade With Giants During White Sox Game
The Toronto Blue Jays entered Saturday’s matchup against the Chicago White Sox looking to get back on track after losing three of their last four games. Unfortunately, they entered the game shorthanded and dealing with injuries after catcher Alejandro Kirk was placed on the 15-day injured list with a fractured left thumb.
It was another hit to Toronto's roster that has already lost multiple position players within the first two weeks of the regular season. Last week, the team traded Leo Jimenez to the Miami Marlins in exchange for cash considerations and a minor-league prospect, but the Blue Jays only made the move because Jimenez had been designated for assignment and had run out of options.
With the organizational depth needing reinforcements, the Blue Jays decided to make a trade during their game on Saturday against the White Sox. Toronto announced that it had acquired infielder Tyler Fitzgerald from the San Francisco Giants in exchange for cash considerations. Fitzgerald was then immediately moved to Triple-A.
Fitzgerald adds some much-needed infield depth for Toronto and is a strong depth piece overall. He was designated for assignment by San Francisco last week, and rather than let another team claim him, Toronto moved quickly to add the utility man. The 28-year-old has the ability to play both second base and shortstop along with the outfield.
Although Fitzgerald will head to Triple-A, he is more than capable of contributing at the MLB level. He has logged 178 games in the majors with San Francisco over the last three seasons.
In 2024, he was an elite hitter at the plate, posting a .280 batting average, .334 on-base percentage, .831 OPS, 15 home runs and 34 RBIs. He took a step backward in 2025, but he has still proven he can perform.
It may only be a matter of time before Toronto calls him up to the 26-man roster. For now, he will head to the minors and await another opportunity as the Blue Jays continue searching for stability early in the 2026 season.
