Blue Jays Dealt More Bad News After Alejandro Kirk's Injury
The Toronto Blue Jays are spiraling in the month of April. Toronto entered Sunday’s series finale against the Minnesota Twins in danger of losing a fourth straight series, and the issues continue to pile up.
Not all of the struggles fall on performance alone, as the Blue Jays have been hit hard by injuries. Toronto’s All-Star catcher Alejandro Kirk has been sidelined since early April after being struck on the left thumb by a foul ball.
He was moved to the 10-day injured list and underwent surgery, with a screw placed in his fractured left thumb. Kirk will miss at least the next six weeks recovering, which is a huge blow for the Blue Jays. He remains one of the league’s best defensive catchers and one of their most reliable hitters.
With Kirk out, the Blue Jays have relied on a tandem of Tyler Heinemann and Brandon Valenzuela to handle catching duties. However, that tandem has effectively become a one-man operation. Heinemann has not appeared in any of the past three games, and Sunday, manager John Schneider revealed the reason.
Schneider said Heinemann is dealing with back spasms, which is why Valenzuela has started three straight games behind the plate. Schneider added that the team has been impressed with Valenzuela’s work so far (h/t Keegan Matheson of MLB .com).
What is most concerning, though, is that Heinemann’s injury leaves Toronto with no true catching depth. If Valenzuela were to suffer an injury, utility infielder Ernie Clement would serve as the emergency catcher, a scenario the Blue Jays desperately want to avoid.
It also places significant pressure on Valenzuela, who is in his rookie season and made his MLB debut less than two weeks ago. Losing Heinemann at the same time Kirk is out for the foreseeable future creates a difficult situation for a team already struggling to find stability.
Toronto does not have meaningful organizational catching depth to call upon, leaving them with limited options as they navigate this stretch. For a club already fighting to stay alive in the American League East, the catching situation has quickly become one of the most concerning developments of their early season.
