Heading into the rubber match of the Los Angeles Dodgers ' World Series rematch against the Toronto Blue Jays , Shohei Ohtani found himself the proud owner of not one but two MLB streaks.
In true Ohtani fashion, the MVP favorite had the longest on-base streak in baseball at 42 games and the longest scoreless innings streak by a starting pitcher dating back to last season. While the former has been extended to 43 after Ohtani was walked by the Jays, his pitching streak was dashed by Jesus Sanchez , who scored Daulton Varsho on a double to left field.
" Shohei Ohtani entered today with the longest active scoreless streak by a starting pitcher," The Athletic's Sonja Chen wrote on social media. "That streak is now over at 24 2/3 innings, and the Blue Jays are on the board first after a Jesús Sánchez RBI double. It's 1-0 Toronto."
Heading into the season with the lofty goal of not only winning the NL MVP but also the first Cy Young of any Japanese-born pitcher in league history , a goal he shares with teammate Yoshinobu Yamamoto , Ohtani is right on his way to that end, holding a perfect pitching record while allowing just that one run over two appearances. While Otanhi didn't have his best stuff against the Blue Jays, recording just two Ks over six innings, his worst day is still better than most pitchers' best, which is why the 50-plus home run hitter very well may be in the Cy Young conversation at season's end if he's able to pitch enough innings.
