The Toronto Blue Jays and Detroit Tigers have agreed on a trade on Wednesday afternoon. The Jays have acquired RHP Connor Seabold from the Tigers in exchange for Minor League LHP Juanmi Vasquez. To make room on the 40-man roster, the Jays have moved right-handed pitcher Jose Berrios to the 60-day IL.
The Blue Jays and Miami Marlins are currently playing in their series finale at the time of writing. The Marlins lead 1-0 in the 3rd inning. Miami won Game 1 of the series, while the Blue Jays responded and took the second game. The winner of this Wednesday's rubber match will take the series.
The Tigers are off to a very rough start this season and are currently last in the AL Central, one year after winning the division. They decided it was best to move on from reliever Connor Seabold after a solid early season in Detroit. Seabold owns a 3.45 ERA, 1.40 WHIP, and has 14 strikeouts in 15.2 innings. Seabold has MLB experience with the Boston Red Sox , Colorado Rockies , Tampa Bay Rays , and Atlanta Braves . This move for Toronto ensures that they are getting a solid bullpen arm as they try to climb back up the AL East.
Juanmi Vasquez is a 23-year-old southpaw with decent numbers in the minors. He owns a career 4.94 ERA in mostly Low A and High A leagues. This season in A+, Vasquez has a 5.87 ERA, 1.70 WHIP, .261 OBA, but has an impressive 35 strikeouts in 23.0 innings.
Jose Berrios is trending in the wrong direction after an impressive start to his career. He has been one of the best strikeout artists in the game, but injuries are a real thing for pitchers. The only thing that could help him at this point is rest.
Dylan Cease has recently landed on the IL . He should return very soon for the Jays.
