As the reigning American League champion Toronto Blue Jays continue their series against the Boston Red Sox , they were dealt some unfortunate news about their starting pitching rotation.
Max Scherzer , who was scheduled to get the start on Wednesday evening, is experiencing back spasms and has been placed on the 15-day Injured List. In a corresponding roster move, Chad Dallas was promoted from Triple-A Buffalo. Meanwhile, Braydon Fisher is slated to take the mound at Fenway Park in Boston on Wednesday, filling the vacancy left by Scherzer.
His back spasms are the latest setback for him this season, as he missed the entire month of May because of right forearm tendinitis and left ankle inflammation. Understandably, it's a frustrating situation .
"I'm frustrated," Scherzer said via Keegan Matheson on X, formerly known as Twitter. "I wanted to get in that rhythm. I wanted to be out there. My arm feels like it's in a really great spot right now, but I can't go."
Earlier this month, Blue Jays skipper John Schneider expressed hope that Scherzer would be able to make more consistent starts so that they could better see what they re-signed him for.
"You want to try to see what it looks like when he gets some consistent work," he said via Jays Journal. "I think he's earned that. It's the reason why we signed him back and you don't want to make any knee-jerk reactions."
So far this season, Scherzer's stats aren't what he or the club would like them to be. He currently sports an ERA of 10.23 with a subpar 1-4 record.
