The defending American League champion Toronto Blue Jays are trying to regain their footing in the race for the playoffs after a slow start this season. They appeared to be moving in the right direction this week after sweeping a road series against the Boston Red Sox , but they suffered a blow in the first game of a weekend series against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field.
Star first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. took a hefty swing during the sixth inning and popped up a pitch from Chicago starter Ben Brown . As he concluded his effort, Guerrero reached for his lower back and stumbled briefly. He came out of the game and did not take the field at his usual spot at first base for the bottom of the inning.
It was a rough day for the Blue Jays , who found themselves on the short end of a 16-2 bludgeoning. While the big loss is obviously a nasty blow for the team to take, the greater concern will be Guerrero's condition. He has struggled this season when it comes to hitting the ball out of the ballpark, but he is slashing .279/.367/.372 with 4 home runs and 30 runs batted in.
The last thing that Blue Jays manager John Schneider wants to see is a serious injury that will cause the team's big, clutch bat to miss significant time.
The loss dropped the Blue Jays to 37-39 on the season, leaving them 9.5 games behind the American League East-leading New York Yankees . The loss also dropped the Blue Jays out of the American League Wild Card structure. They are one-half game behind the Athletics (37-38).
