Bo Nix injury: 5 things we know about QB's ankle and surgeon

While there are several unknowns about the injury to Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix , we wanted to take a look at the things we do know ahead of the Broncos ' AFC championship week preparation against the New England Patriots .

1. Sean Payton announced Bo Nix has a fracture in his ankle : Nix injured his ankle on a two-yard loss in overtime, just before throwing a deep pass to wide receiver Marvin Mims that resulted in a pass interference, setting up a game-winning field goal. After the play, Nix came up limping slightly, and (looking back) he had a much more pronounced limp after centering the ball for kicker Wil Lutz 's field goal attempt.

2. Bo Nix is scheduled for surgery on Tuesday: In his second media appearance of the night on Saturday, Payton confirmed Nix will have surgery on Tuesday in Birmingham, Alabama, performed by Dr. Norman Waldrop. The surgery will end Nix's 2025 season, a campaign that ended up in the Broncos ' and league history books.

3. Dr. Norman Waldrop is well-known among NFL quarterbacks: Dr. Waldrop was the surgeon who performed the turf toe surgery of Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow earlier this season. Burrow came back ahead of schedule, and played the final six games of the 2025 campaign. Dr. Waldrop has also worked on Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and former Tennessee Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill , among others. Waldrop has also worked with the New Orleans Saints .

4. Dr. Waldrop previously practiced in Colorado:Dr. Waldrop also practiced at Vail, Colorado's The Steadman Clinic , a center "world-renowned" for its surgeons & Orthopaedic Surgery. Waldrop was mentored by Dr. Thomas Clanton , who is known for his work on the foot and ankle. Clanton also served as the team orthopaedist for the Houston Texans .

5. Bo Nix's recovery timeline:As Payton is wont to do, he played the details of Nix's recovery close to the vest.  “Listen, the surgeon gets his hands on the X-rays,” said Payton during a media conference call on Sunday. “We have enough information for everyone. The focus is on the next week’s game.”

For now, the Broncos will do exactly what Payton said, and turn their attention toward the Patriots. The two teams have been nipping at each other's heels through the regular season. Now, they are set to meet and play for the right to be the AFC's representative in Super Bowl LX, and Nix will focus on surgery and recovery.
