Braeden Carrington takes first step toward seeking fifth year | Reports

MADISON – Former Wisconsin men's basketball player Braeden Carrington appears to be taking the first step toward trying to get another year of eligibility.

Carrington is among a large group of athletes who are seeking an injunction against the NCAA, attorneys Darren Heitner and Ryan Downton told CBS Sports and On3 on July 17.

The lawsuit in California includes more than 45 athletes who were in the 2022 recruiting class, according to On3. The athletes exhausted their eligibility in 2025-26 and – unlike current athletes – do not get any added eligibility amid the NCAA's implementation of new age-based eligibility rules.

The lawsuit reportedly involving Carrington follows an Ohio judge's decision to grant a preliminary injunction for 24 men's and women's basketball players earlier in July. Downton also worked on that case.

This is potentially the first of many steps before Carrington's status changes. He has continued to practice with the Badgers ' 2026-27 team in the summer, unlike the other seniors who exhausted their eligibility.

With one open roster spot remaining, Wisconsin has watched the legal situation unfold while also scouting international talent.

"Does the injunction stay?" Wisconsin coach Greg Gard told reporters on July 14. "Does the NCAA push back on it immediately, or do they wait? I think there's some unanswered questions there."

Gard said the last roster spot would most likely be filled by "somebody of large size." But the 6-foot-5 Carrington obviously would bring value to the Badgers after setting the program's single-game 3-point record and averaging 8.3 points per game off the bench in his one season in Madison.
