The Atlanta Braves have started to find their footing again in recent days, having won three out of their last four games after a tough rough patch toward the end of last month. The Braves are trying to hold onto first place in the NL East over the Philadelphia Phillies , who have surged up the standings in recent weeks.
On Sunday, the Braves announced an interesting roster move regarding their pitching department.
"The Braves announced that right-hander Carlos Carrasco has been selected to the active roster. Right-hander JR Ritchie was optioned to Triple-A Gwinnett in the corresponding move, and no further transactions were needed since Atlanta had an open spot on its 40-man roster," reported Mark Polishuk of MLB Trade Rumors.
The Braves have selected Carrasco's minor league contract six times this season already, repeating a cycle in which he is brought up to the big club, designated back to the minor leagues, hits free agency, and then is picked up again.
Fans in the comment section of the Braves' post on X, formerly Twitter, announcing the news were puzzled, to say the least.
"It's kinda funny that this guy keeps coming back after electing free agency so many times," noted one fan.
"What they're doing to JR Ritchie with this continual yo-yo is ridiculous and not good for his development. Leave him alone at one place. Why bring him up in the first place. They could have just let Anthony Molina stay," added another.
Ritchie has been up and down this season for the Braves, as the team hopes to see continued improvement from the young pitcher. Meanwhile, at age 37, Carrasco provides some veteran experience that Atlanta is clearly happy to keep bringing back on a loop.
