The Atlanta Braves know they have a massive hole at shortstop. Yahoo Sports reported that the team is floating Anthony Volpe as a trade target. This name comes up because the current plan looks shaky. Mauricio Dubon and Ha-Seong Kim are both set to hit free agency soon. If the team does not sign them, they have no clear starter.
Jim Jarvis sits as the top option inside the farm system. But he has not played much at the big league level. Relying on him feels like a gamble for a team that wants to win now. Anthony Volpe offers a safer path. He is young, fast, and has played in high-pressure games for the Yankees. The idea to bring him to Atlanta makes sense on paper. It solves a problem that could hurt the team for years.

The Shortstop Gap Is Real
No shortstop need across Major League Baseball is more glaring than the Braves possess. Anthony Franco from MLBTR.com wrote that the team faces a tough choice. He noted that Dubon is likely to get a two-year deal but he is better as a utility player. The team needs a true starter who can play every day. Volpe fits that bill perfectly. He has shown he can handle the speed of the game. The Yankees might be willing to move him if the price is right.
Per Heavy.com , the Braves are also looking at other young shortstops like Brayan Rocchio. But Volpe stands out as the top external option. The team cannot afford to wait until the draft to find a solution. The focus on shortstop has also made people forget about the second base spot. That position might need a shakeup too. The whole infield needs to be solid for the Braves to succeed.
Why Volpe Is The Right Move
Braves fans know that winning requires more than just good pitching. You need defense up the middle to stop runs. Volpe brings that defensive stability. The Yankees have built a strong team around him. Trading him would mean they see a way to improve their own roster. For Atlanta, this is a chance to land a star without waiting. The cost will be high, but the reward is worth it.

The team has been all-in on Jeremy Peña from the Astros as a primary target. But Peña might cost too much money or too many prospects. Volpe offers a cheaper alternative that still brings elite talent. He is younger than many free agents on the market. This gives the Braves a long-term solution. The front office has to balance the budget while getting the best player. Volpe fits that math better than most other names.
The Risk Of Doing Nothing
If the Braves do not make a move, they risk falling behind. The competition in the National League East is fierce. Teams like the Mets and Phillies will not give up ground easily. It could lead to bad defense and lost games. The 2021 championship team had great infield defense. They need that same level of play again. Volpe is the best way to get it back.
