The clock is ticking on the biggest international signing the Braves have seen in years. Alfredo Sena has a pre-agreement with Atlanta, but the deal hangs on a knife's edge. The Collective Bargaining Agreement talks could scrap the whole signing period for a new draft system instead. This is not a small issue for the farm system. Battery Power reported that the CBA negotiations may cancel the upcoming international free agent signing period entirely. If that happens, Sena goes into a draft pool where he might not be picked by Atlanta. The team spent years building a case for Sena, and now a bureaucratic shift could wipe it out.
AJ Smith-Shawver faced a different kind of reality check this season. He did not turn out to be the savior the pitching staff desperately needed. That does not mean he is done, but the pressure is on. Demetrius from Battery Power looked at his season and noted that while he failed to save the rotation, he still showed some promise. The Braves need every arm they can get, and Shawver has the stuff to help if he finds his spot. The World Series is happening right now, but the future of the roster is already being decided in these backroom talks.

The Draft Risk Is Real
Atlanta usually wins by outspending everyone for top international talent. Sena looks like one of the best players we have seen in recent years. He fits the profile of a player worth a massive bonus. I have argued before that dumping a huge chunk of the bonus pool on one person is a bad move. The data suggests it is a risky bet. However, the scouting and player development departments have improved since that old data was useful. Sena might be the one exception where the big spend makes sense. The timing of the CBA talks makes this a high-stakes issue for fans to watch. A new draft system would change how teams get young talent forever.
Shawver Needs a New Look
Smith-Shawver's season was a mix of hope and disappointment. The team needed a big spark from the rotation, and he could not deliver it in the big moments. That is the harsh truth of the major leagues. He showed flashes of being good, but flashes are not enough to win a championship. The Brewers and Rays are battling it out in the World Series right now, showing how tight the game can be. Drew Rasmussen is Tampa Bay's ace, having been nails this postseason. The Braves need their own Henderson moments. They cannot wait for Shawver to fix things if he is not ready. The front office must decide if he is part of the plan or a trade chip.

The future of the 2027 season and the financial foundation of the sport rests on these CBA talks. The timing of the signing period is critical. If the deal gets cancelled, the Braves lose their top target. If the deal goes through, they get a potential star.
