The Atlanta Braves have been dealing with a wave of injuries recently. The latest casualty to the injured list was right fielder Ronald Acuña Jr. . One of the first players to land on the IL was closer Raisel Iglesias , after he reportedly slept the wrong way on his shoulder.
“Atlanta Braves closer Raisel Iglesias, who has been feeling discomfort in his right shoulder since sleeping on it wrong Friday night, was placed on the 15-day injured list Tuesday. The team said Iglesias had an MRI on the shoulder that showed no structural damage,” ESPN wrote.
Iglesias is nearing the end of his 15-day stint and does not appear to need a rehab assignment, meaning he could rejoin the club as soon as he is eligible. Tuesday is expected to be the day he returns.
“After today’s victory against the Colorado Rockies , Atlanta Braves manager Walt Weiss told reporters that closer Raisel Iglesias will be activated from the 15-day Injured List on Tuesday in Seattle where the Braves will be taking on the Seattle Mariners ,” Batter Power’s DJourn wrote.
With Iglesias set to return, Atlanta will need to make a roster decision. One name that has emerged as a potential designated-for-assignment candidate is reliever Aaron Bummer , who has struggled to start the season.
“Think there's a decent chance the Braves DFA Bummer on Tuesday when Iglesias returns. Much easier option is Carrasco but they might want his rubber arm for the rest of the road trip. I suppose they could also send Ritchie down after Monday's start,” Batter Power’s Scott Coleman posted.
The Braves have several options to consider, and much will depend on Monday’s game. If J.R. Ritchie turns in another strong start and Carlos Carrasco isn’t needed out of the bullpen, Bummer could be the odd man out.
Entering the season, Bummer would not have been viewed as a likely roster casualty, but performance ultimately dictates decisions. He is in the final year of a $13 million deal with Atlanta. If he clears waivers, he could return to the organization even after being designated for assignment.
