The Atlanta Braves have brought veteran right-hander Carlos Carrasco back on another minor league contract , continuing an arrangement that has become familiar throughout the 2026 season. The 39-year-old returns to the organization after electing free agency following his designation for assignment earlier in the week.
Carrasco was removed from Atlanta's roster on Wednesday alongside JR Ritchie when relievers Tyler Kinley and Ian Hamilton were added. After clearing waivers, he chose free agency before quickly agreeing to another minor league deal with Atlanta. It's the sixth time this season that he has signed a minor league contract with the team after being designated for assignment.
The veteran has settled into a unique roster role for the Braves in 2026. Because he cannot be optioned to the minors without his consent due to his service time, Atlanta has repeatedly designated him for assignment, watched him clear waivers, and then re-signed him. The arrangement effectively gives the organization an experienced depth arm who can be recalled when additional bullpen coverage is needed without creating long-term roster complications.
Carrasco has made seven major league appearances for the Braves this season, working 14 2/3 innings with a 3.68 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP. He has recorded six strikeouts while issuing just one walk, producing a 6:1 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Although his 9.8% strikeout rate is below both the league average and his previous career standards, he has limited free passes and provided valuable multi-inning relief.
Carrasco's most recent outings have also demonstrated his durability, as he has thrown at least 30 pitches in each of his last four appearances. Atlanta has primarily used him in low-leverage, mop-up situations, where he has served as a dependable innings eater whenever the bullpen has required reinforcement. With the Braves' recent heavy bullpen workload, another call-up could come sooner rather than later.
