The Minnesota Vikings look to rebound from last season's disappointment with a bounce-back season from new starting quarterback Kyler Murray and the offense. The organization spent a ton of money, going all in on their first-year, cheap quarterback, J.J. McCarthy, last season. While that was the correct approach, it didn't translate to success as the Vikings finished 9-8 in 2025.
Now, the Vikings turn to Murray on a cheap, one-year prove-it deal to lift the team to the playoffs. The former Arizona Cardinals quarterback and head coach Kevin O'Connell are in similar spots in 2026.
Murray is looking to shake the reputation of being someone who doesn't put in extra effort and strives for greatness. Although, the reports of him clocking in at nine AM on the dot and leaving at five PM isn't helping matters. The former number one overall pick is looking to live up to the draft selection and prove himself as a reliable starting quarterback in the NFL.
Now, O'Connell is in a similar spot, because his reputation is based on his offensive prowess and looking at the EPA numbers, hasn't fared better than Mike Zimmer's Vikings. That is a true stat and something that seems unbelievable.
It's not like O'Connell was lacking at quarterback before McCarthy either. Kirk Cousins and Sam Darnold did more than enough. Sure, last season drags down the offensive EPA considerably, but one season shouldn't stop someone in such high regard, right?
O'Connell has a reputation as an offensive guru, and I believe he is, but he'll need to prove that after the quarterback search landed on Murray. As far as Murray goes, if he can't put together a full, consistent season under O'Connell, things can become murky for his future as a starter in the NFL.
Both men having chips on their shoulders and, in many regards, their backs against the wall can be viewed as a good thing. O'Connell's job isn't on the line, but his reputation is. Murray's reputation needs to be broken, and if it can't be broken under O'Connell, then it may be all she wrote for the Vikings quarterback.
The Vikings are set to win now. Yes, the division is tough, but both men have much to prove in 2026, and pressure either busts pipes or makes diamonds. Minnesota needs to have a great season, and both O'Connell and Murray will be under the microscope.
