In the fourth round of the 2026 NFL Draft, the Kansas City Chiefs selected defensive back Jadon Canady from Oregon. What is the team getting with Canady? Let’s dive into his strengths first.

Canady’s Strengths

There’s a lot to like with Canady’s profile, and it starts with his explosiveness. When he strides towards the ball, he looks like a blur. He covers an incredible amount of ground when he’s flying downhill.

This shows up in multiple ways. Canady can play deep safety and quickly get to the flat as a run defender. Oregon often plays a quarters shell, which forces the safeties to fly downhill and tackle in the run fit. Canady has many plays where he explodes downhill and completes the tackle near the line of scrimmage with his speed. Canady’s range in space is elite regardless of where he starts on the field.

Canady’s downhill explosiveness can translate as a blitzer. He can close in a hurry, an appealing trait to defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo.

Canady’s twitch also helps him in man coverage. He can run downfield with any player. It also helps him recover when he gets out of position. Canady will sometimes lose at the top of the route due to physicality, but he can still stay in position by trailing and closing space from behind. Gaining separation vs. Canady is challenging, even for the shiftiest receivers. He can cover fast, quick receivers.

Canady’s positional versatility is impressive. He can play single-high safety, half-field safety, or as a slot defender. That versatility gives Canady a high floor. If he doesn’t succeed at deep safety, he can kick down to the slot or vice versa. Regardless of how you adjust your personnel, Canady can find a role.

Canady gives up some size in the run game, but he’s a competitive player who has zero fear tackling in space or taking on blocks. He’ll crash into blocks with all his speed and force. It won’t always work with his lack of weight, but there’s no doubt Canady will give it his all.

Where Canady needs to improve

The biggest question about Canady is whether he can hold up in the run game from the slot. While he’s competitive, he does struggle to track blocks and set the edge in space. Teams will test him by running at him to see if he can hold up. I’m skeptical he can, despite his competitiveness and speed. It wasn’t an area of strength for him in college.

I think Canady can play the run from deep safety well, but if he does, he will need to improve his pursuit angles in space. Sometimes, his speed can cause him to overrun angles and not take the best path in space. Canady is a good tackler who is willing to frame up, but you can’t miss angles against NFL players who can take any play to the house with one bad angle.

Canady’s fit with the Chiefs

When I watched Canady’s highlights, my first thought was that he was going to be a full-time slot defender. But after watching some film, I actually think his best fit in the NFL will be at deep safety.

Canady’s coverage ability is maximized from the slot, but I’m skeptical he can hold up vs. the run against NFL teams. Having a Nickel who can hold up versus blocks and set the edge is so important. NFL teams have shifted to using heavier wide receivers in the slot who can block and create space at the second level. Canady would need to set the edge vs. those players, and he may need to develop into that ability.

That being said, I love Canady’s fit as a deep safety. He can cover across the field and is smart at reading routes. He’s better as a run defender when he can come downhill in space and tackle one-on-one. Doing that versus NFL running backs will be more challenging, but I think he can do that.

On early downs, I would want Canady playing deep, but you can still sometimes use him in the slot. On obvious passing downs, Canady could kick down to the slot and cover a receiver in man coverage. I don’t have many concerns about Canady being able to stay with shifty slot receivers.

Canady can also rotate to deep safety from the slot, something Spagnuolo loves doing. He can also be used more effectively as a blitzer from the slot on third downs.

The Bottom line

I didn’t watch Canady before the draft, so I didn’t know anything about him. After watching some of his film, I came away pretty impressed. There’s a role for him in this defense.

I think it’s possible Canady could be the second-best safety on the roster after Alohi Gilman . Gilman and Canady give the Chiefs plenty of range in deep coverage, although I am worried about how they would hold up in run defense. It wouldn’t shock me if Canady quickly beats Jaden Hicks and Chamarri Conner for a spot there.

I also think Canady is the most talented slot defender on the roster now. His speed and twitch are significantly better than Conner’s. Kadar Kohou is also on the roster, but he’s coming off a knee injury that could zap some of his athleticism. Canady could quickly get reps from the slot due to his coverage ability.

The Chiefs don’t have the same depth in the secondary as in years previous, so I think there’s a good chance Canady can carve out a role this season. They haven’t had a player who could play deep safety and man coverage in the slot since Tyrann Mathieu . Canady will likely not be as good as Mathieu, but that role can work on this defense. I’m excited to watch Canady play.
