Brewers' Pat Murphy Reacts to Concerning Brandon Woodruff Outing

Despite missing three of their best offensive players in Christian Yelich , Jackson Chourio , and Andrew Vaughn , the Milwaukee Brewers were able to rout the Arizona Diamondbacks in their series finale on Thursday, 13-1.

The game saw the Brewers notch 14 hits in 37 at-bats, and the effort came two days after Milwaukee opened the series with 15 hits in a 13-2 win over the Diamondbacks to open the series.

However, not all of the afternoon gave cause for celebration, as starting right-hander Brandon Woodruff struggled with his velocity, with his fastball falling below 87 mph when it had averaged 92.5 mph throughout the season.

After the game, manager Pat Murphy revealed what Woodruff was dealing with.

“Yeah, he doesn't feel like he's injured,” Murphy told the media. “He just said, ‘my arm’s dead, nothing's coming out.’ I think we just have to be really cautious here. We're going to get him checked out. We're going to get him tested. We're going to get him everything he needs just in case with his history, but you know, we've seen it.

“We've seen it where his velocity's down early and then it climbs,” he added. “We were waiting to see in the second inning if it climbed, but it was down as low as it's ever been.”

On Friday, the Brewers placed Woodruff on the 15-day Injured List and made a corresponding move. The Brewers made the announcement on their account on X.

Murphy was hopeful that there is not an underlying injury, but he believes Woodruff may miss some time.

“And then we think maybe with some rest he can build back up and that'll — you know, people go through stuff like this,” Murphy said. “Hopefully, you know, he's solid and there's no injury there. That would be awful, but I think he'll be down for a while.

“I don't, I'm not going to say right now before any of these tests get done or that type of thing,” Murphy added. “But it seems like something he's going to be able to work through. We haven't made a final decision on that.”

Murphy also explained that Woodruff’s warmups usually begin with him starting at a lower velocity and then ramping up as he goes along. However, the low speeds never improved on Thursday.

“When he got to the mound, it didn't change at all,” Murphy said. “You know, and then after the first inning, we said, ‘Hey, man, what do you got?’ He said, ‘Well, let me go back and see if I can get a little extra.’

And then you're starting to think, ‘Wait a minute, we don't want him to get a little extra,’” Murphy added. “And then maybe something happens to him if he strains or whatever. So I think it's a process he's got to go through.”

This season, Woodruff is 2-1 through six starts with a 3.60 ERA through 30 innings pitched.
