Brewers offense relentless in 13-1 shellacking of Diamondbacks

The Milwaukee Brewers scored in six of eight innings during a relentless offensive attack against the Arizona Diamondbacks on April 30, closing the series with a 13-1 win and left American Family Field with a 16-14 record at the start of May.

There was, however, one catch. Starting pitcher Brandon Woodruff came out of the gate with velocities in the mid-80s and left the game in the second inning , casting a pall over a game that was otherwise all Milwaukee.

With Woodruff out, Milwaukee's bullpen held the Diamondbacks to just five hits the rest of the way, all against Shane Drohan , who allowed one earned run over four innings and came away with his first major league win. Grant Anderson, Trevor Megill , Brian Fitzpatrick and Jake Woodford allowed nothing else.

Box score: Brewers 13, Diamondbacks 1

The Brewers scored three runs in the first against Diamondbacks starter Michael Soroka (4-1) and never let up, even though Soroka came in with a 4-0 record and 2.60 ERA. Top-three hitters Garrett Mitchell , William Contreras and Brice Turang all had multiple hits, finishing 8-for-11 as a group with five RBIs and nine runs scored. Contreras finished a triple shy of the cycle and collected four hits total.

Eight of the nine starters notched a hit in the game. Sal Frelick hit his third home run of the year, meaning the Brewers had their first multi-homer game since April 14. It wasn't the Brewers' typical flurry of speed and soft contact, either, with seven hits in excess of 100 miles per hour off the bat.

Luis Rengifo had a two-run double with two outs in the first, Tyler Black logged a two-run double in the sixth and the Brewers faced a position player pitching – catcher James McCann – for the second time in the series, scoring a run in the ninth at his expense. The Brewers sandwiched two of their more lopsided wins of the season (including a 13-2 win April 28 ) on either side of a 6-2 loss April 29 in the series against Arizona.

Brian Fitzpatrick notches first big-league strikeout, and a catcher is pitching for the Diamondbacks

Fitzpatrick made his big-league debut for the Brewers in the second game of the series, and a day later he has two strikeouts for the first punchouts of his career. It's still 12-1 in the eighth, and now Arizona catcher McCann is pitching for the second time in this series.

He went 1-2-3 on Friday, but today, the Brewers drew a walk (Turang, seriously) and Contreras singled. No cycle for William, but a fourth hit.

Sal Frelick goes deep and the Brewers have first multi-homer game since April 14

Sal Frelick uncorked his third homer of the year, well out of here in right field, and that's the first multi-homer game for the Brewers since April 14 when Jake Bauers and Gary Sánchez went deep against Toronto .

Every Brewers hitter has a hit except Greg Jones. It's 12-1 in the bottom of the seventh.

Tyler Black watches his two-run double in the sixth inning.

Tyler Black's two-run double part of three-run sixth

The onslaught has not stopped. Milwaukee now leads 11-1, with a two-run double to the right-field wall by Black capping a three-run rally. The top five batters in the lineup today have all reached at least twice and a combined 14 times. And one of the times they didn't reach was an RBI groundout. That's 10-16 overall with four walks and eight RBIs.

This isn't a light-hitting series of bloop singles today, either. The Brewers are smacking it around the park.

Brewers pouring it on, and William Contreras has four RBIs

The offense hasn't stopped churning in the fourth inning for the Brewers, with each of the first four batters collecting hits and finally chasing Soroka from the game.

Contreras now has three hits in as many at-bats, with four RBIs and just a triple shy of the cycle. He hasn't had a triple since Aug. of 2024, but one never knows!

Turang has two hits, as well. It's still just the fourth inning, and it's 8-1.

Arizona gets a run back, makes it 6-1 in the fourth

Corbin Carroll 's leadoff double turned into a run on a bloop single by Lourdes Gurriel Jr. , putting Arizona on the board. It's still 6-1 as we head to the bottom of the fourth.

Lead grows to 6-0 on Luis Rengifo groundout

There's a lot of ballgame left, but the Milwaukee Brewers have put themselves in great position to grab the win, even if Woodruff's health situation might be the story of the day.

Luis Rengifo's RBI groundout scored Bauers from third and it's 6-0 heading to the fourth inning.

William Contreras launches a home run to center, and Brewers take 5-0 lead

Grant Anderson finished the second inning, and Shane Drohan worked a clean third for the Brewers in relief of Woodruff, and then Contreras launched a 3-1 pitch way out of here to center, making it 5-0. Turang led off the inning with a single.

Soroka, who's been so good this season, getting knocked around today in Milwaukee. The Brewers had just two homers in the past 13 games, but they now have one today.

Brandon Woodruff taken out of game in second inning, velocities were wildly diminished

The dramatically reduced velocity did not come back in the second inning, and Brewers manager Pat Murphy walks out to the mound with the trainer. It's not just a slight drop; we're talking seven miles per hour off a standard Woodruff pitch.

He's coming out of the game. Will obviously be a serious story line afterward as the Brewers figure out if they're going to be without their veteran leader in the rotation for long.

Grant Anderson will check into the game with one out and a runner on in the second inning.

Brewers bust out the bats for three-run first inning

The Brewers may only have two homers in 13 games, but they're capable to putting together some doubles. Contreras hit one to score Garrett Mitchell from first base, and Luis Rengifo fell behind, 0-2, with two outs before lacing a two-run double that gave the Brewers a 3-0 lead in the first.

Both walks drawn in the inning came around to score.

The Brewers have a 3-0 lead and Woodruff is back out to the mound for the second despite some mid-80s velocity readings in the first. We'll see how this goes.

Brandon Woodruff's velocity down early

Some early concern for Woodruff, who's down into the 80s on his fastballs and struggled with his control initially, walking leadoff batter Geraldo Perdomo .

He then struck out Ketel Marte with a nasty breaking pitch, but it's definitely something to monitor. Woodruff's velocity has oscillated in his quest to get back from shoulder surgery, but this is particularly low, averaging 85.6 miles per hour in the first inning. His first pitch of the day was an 84-mile per hour four-seamer according to the scoreboard.

He still got two strikeouts and a pop out, so it's a scoreless frame.
