Broncos bring back familiar face after losing starting center to IR
After placing starting center Luke Wattenberg ( shoulder ) on injured reserve, the Denver Broncos brought in more depth at the position by signing a lineman off the practice squad of a division rival.
Denver signed center Sam Mustipher off the Los Angeles Chargers ' practice squad on Friday. To make room for Mustipher, the Broncos waived backup lineman Calvin Throckmorton . If he clears waivers, Throckmorton will likely be re-signed to the practice squad.
Mustipher (6-2, 332 pounds) entered the league as an undrafted free agent out of Notre Dame with the Chicago Bears in 2019. He started 40 games during his stint in Chicago and has spent time with four other NFL teams since then, including going to training camp with the Broncos in 2024.
Now back in Denver, Mustipher will serve as the team's backup center behind fill-in starter Alex Forsyth. It's also convenient timing for the Broncos that Mustipher most recently played for the Chagers, the team's Week 18 opponent.
