Jonah Elliss isn't the only Denver Broncos defender set to change positions this offseason.
While speaking at the NFL's annual league meeting last month, Broncos coach Sean Payton revealed that Elliss will get snaps at inside linebacker in 2026, moving him from outside linebacker. We assumed that development was bad news for Drew Sanders , who was seemingly in line to lose ILB snaps to Elliss this season.
It turns out that Sanders is also changing positions.
Zac Stevens of DNVR Broncos reported Monday that Sanders is moving back to outside linebacker . Call it a switcheroo — Elliss is now an ILB and Sanders is now an OLB, as it appears that they essentially swapped spots.
Sanders (6-5, 233 pounds) has been switching between ILB and OLB since college, and he started his NFL career with positional uncertainty as Denver moved him between roles. Sanders was set to compete at ILB last year, but he injured his foot during the spring and missed the entire 2025 season.
Injuries have detailed the first three years of Sanders' career. Since being picked by the Broncos in the third round of the 2023 NFL draft out of Arkansas, Sanders has missed 30 games, more than he's played in (21). The 25-year-old defender has 32 tackles and one sack on his resume. Now entering the final year of his rookie contract, this summer might be Sanders' last opportunity to get his career back on track with the Broncos.
