Denver Broncos guard Ben Powers has reacted to being hit with a $17,911 NFL fine for a blindside block that was not penalised during their Week 4 loss to the San Francisco 49ers.
The veteran offensive lineman is appealing the fine, but first wants to establish exactly which play led to the punishment.
Powers is facing the fine under the NFL's revised discipline system, which was introduced through a joint effort between the league and NFLPA in August. The first-offence amount is in line with the standard penalty, while another infraction could cost him as much as $23,882.
Ben Powers wants answers before appealing his NFL fine
The fine was reported by 9News' Mike Klis, who revealed that Powers had been punished for a first-quarter blindside block despite not being flagged during the game.
Powers confirmed he plans to appeal, but admitted he was not even sure which play had resulted in the fine.
"I have to find out what play it was, first," Powers said.
If the fine stands, Powers will have one strike against him. Two further infractions of this type would result in a one-game suspension, while the strike would also carry over into future seasons.
There is some financial relief available, as Powers could receive part of his fine money back at the end of the season if he avoids any further incidents.
The Broncos guard is also entering a key period with his future in Denver uncertain. Powers is on an expiring contract and has started 44 of 46 games for the Broncos since joining the team.
Denver is also waiting for the outcome of Quinn Meinerz's appeal after he received a $14,926 fine for an illegal celebration and vulgar act.
Powers now has another reason to put the issue behind him as Denver prepare for their upcoming AFC West game against the Los Angeles Chargers.
