The Denver Broncos were hit with another training camp injury on Tuesday, and they are now extremely thin at center.
Michael Deiter was carted off the practice field on Tuesday, according to reporters on site. Deiter (6-6, 315 pounds) had been getting more reps at center following injuries to starting center Luke Wattenberg and primary backup Alex Forsyth . The 29-year-old Deiter spent time with three other NFL teams before landing in Denver late in the 2025 season. He is a valuable backup with 35 career starts on his résumé.
With Wattenberg and Forsyth already sidelined and Deiter now injured, the Broncos are now down to versatile backup lineman Calvin Throckmorton and undrafted rookie Gavin Ortega. After Deiter was carted off the field, Denver's coaches had star guard Quinn Meinerz practice snaps on the sideline during Tuesday's practice.
If the Broncos play most of their starters in Friday's preseason opener against the Atlanta Falcons , Meinerz would presumably be the first man up, followed by Throckmorton and then Ortega.
