The Denver Broncos nearly reached the Super Bowl in Bo Nix 's second season as the starting quarterback last season, but a crushing injury to Nix at the end of their Divisional Round win against the Buffalo Bills cost them any chance of completing their Super Bowl run.
Now, Sean Payton and company are hard at work improving the roster coming into next season. While most of that involves making some bigger moves, such as trading for Dolphins star wide receiver Jaylen Waddle , Denver is also making some moves on the fringes. They brought in Kurt Warner 's son, E.J., for a minicamp tryout.
On Saturday, Payton teased possibly signing Warner to a contract and gave him a comparison to a longtime pro, via Pro Football Talk.
"That's a great question," Payton said. "We'll discuss that. It means look, we have 90 [roster spots], so it is possible you can bring someone back in on a trial basis for the minicamp. Yet generally with those practices, two [quarterbacks] is not a problem. It would be more of an issue if you felt a player was going to be a PUP in training camp, and that's not going to be the case.
"I'm not saying we couldn't sign an additional quarterback. We've discussed it, but really more in terms of, 'Do we see something in these two guys?' This [E.J.] Warner reminds me a lot of Chase Daniel . If you see his height, weight, size, speed, they're very similar. He's done a nice job. He's done a very nice job and especially considering he's coming off a weekend with different terminology, and he's kind of yawned at it. It's been real quick for him."
Warner started his college career at Temple before spending a season at Rice. He got NFL looks based on his final year in college, at Fresno State, where he led the Mountain West with a 69.3% completion percentage.
It will be hard for Warner to crack the Broncos' depth chart at quarterback, with Nix firmly cemented as the starter and Jarrett Stidham back as the backup. Sam Ehlinger is back as the likely third-string quarterback as well, but maybe Warner can impress enough during the offseason to earn some preseason reps.
