Broncos sign former Saints quarterback after Bo Nix injury
Could Sean Payton lure Drew Brees out of retirement to save the Denver Broncos ' season? Or would he be better off trying to recruit Taysom Hill ? Those are the kinds of questions Broncos fans have been asking themselves in the days after an overtime win over the Buffalo Bills was spiked by a season-ending injury to their starting quarterback. Now they have their answer, and Payton brought in a former New Orleans Saints quarterback after all.
With a broken ankle taking Bo Nix out of the AFC Championship Game, the Broncos signed former Saints quarterback Ben DiNucci to help reinforce their depth chart. DiNucci was with the Saints last offseason, at least until they drafted Tyler Shough , and he's well-known in Denver as alongtime backup. Back in 2023 he opted to stay on the Broncos' bench rather than join the Saints after Derek Carr went down with a shoulder injury.
So it'll be Jarrett Stidham , Nix's backup all season, filling in for him this Sunday against the New England Patriots . That's probably for the best. Brees is expecting a gold jacket from the Pro Football Hall of Fame this summer and can't throw with his right arm anyway. Hill suffered an AC joint injury in his throwing shoulder during the Saints' regular season finale, too, but we don't know how serious it is. Retirement was a consideration for No. 7 even before that. Finally joining Payton in Denver after years of speculation would have made for a great story, but it isn't happening. Let's see if Stidham and DiNucci can put in a good week of practice to prepare for a historic upset.
