The Boston Bruins have made another trade with the New York Rangers.
The Bruins acquired defenseman Will Borgen from the Rangers for a 2027 second-round pick and a conditional 2028 third-round pick.
If the Bruins make the conference final in either 2027 or 2028, and Borgen plays in half of his playoff games, the conditional third-round pick turns into a second.
Borgen, 29, is coming off a 15-point (5-10–15) season in 75 games with the Rangers. He is not advertised as an offensive defenseman. Instead, he is a shutdown, physical defenseman who can kill penalties. The 6-foot-3 defenseman played second- and third-pair minutes on Broadway.

"Will addresses some of the areas that we lose in Andrew Peeke , who was a really good contributor to our club, too," Sweeney said Wednesday. "Will's got length. He skates well. He could be closing the d-zone. Penalty killing is an area where we want to make sure we continue to take maybe a little load off of Charlie [McAvoy] in some of those situations as a primary guy. So we can spread that around a little bit."
He is also a right-handed shot, which is something the Bruins needed and have addressed on July 1.
He landed in New York last season after the Kaapo Kakko trade and played in a total of 126 games with the Rangers. Before the trade, he spent four seasons in Seattle and set a career-high with 25 points (3-22–25) in 2023-24.
The Moorhead, Minnesota, native has played in 373 career games with the Rangers, Kraken, and Buffalo Sabres. The Sabres drafted him in the fourth round (92nd overall) of the 2015 NHL Draft.

Borgen is signed until the 2029-30 season with a $4.1 million cap hit. The contract comes with a modified no-trade clause until 2028-29. He has a 15-team no-trade list for the 2026-27 season, a 10-team no-trade list in 2027-28, and the list becomes six teams for the 2028-29 season.
It's the second move of the day between Don Sweeney and Chris Drury. The Bruins traded Joonas Korpisalo to New York for a fourth-round pick and Kalle Vaisanen just a few hours before.
The Bruins have $4,502,917 in cap space to work with, but expect more moves as they now have eight defensemen on the NHL roster, and that does not include Jordan Harris and Frederic Brunet .
