BOSTON — Marco Sturm elected to play Jeremy Swayman on Saturday against the Vancouver Canucks for a fourth straight game and give the goalie a day off on Sunday.
The day off lasted a period-and-a-half, as the Bruins coach pulled Joonas Korpisalo in the second period of Boston’s 6-2 loss to the Ottawa Senators on Sunday night.
“I didn’t really want to do that,” Sturm said after the game. “Korpi tried everything he possibly could, we just left him hanging a little bit. That’s just the way it is sometimes.”
Korpisalo gave up five goals on 17 shots, including three in the first period.
“You never want to get pulled,” the goalie said. “Doesn’t matter what happens. Today was one of those days. And obviously I’m not happy about how I played. You play well, I don’t think you get pulled.”
It’s unclear who will play Tuesday when the Bruins host the Montreal Canadiens before the NHL’s holiday break.
Korpisalo was far from the only problem the Bruins faced on Sunday. The net-front presence struggled, the defense broke down in front of both Korpisalo and Swayman and the Senators outplayed the Bruins for a full 60 minutes.
“They came out flying. They came out skating,” Sturm said. “They had a lot of energy, and they outworked us right from the first puck drop and they finished us right away in the paint. We almost didn’t do anything about it. It was a very disappointing night.”
