The Boston Bruins have an intriguing storyline waiting for them Thursday night. JJ Peterka will face the team that traded him. And the timing could hardly be better for a Bruins offense searching for answers.
Boston hosts the Utah Mammoth at TD Garden at 7 p.m. ET, giving Peterka his first opportunity to play against his former organization since joining the Bruins in a June trade.
The German forward spent the 2025-26 season with Utah, scoring 25 goals before being dealt to Boston. Through four games with his new team, Peterka already has two goals. That makes him one of the few Bruins forwards enjoying a productive start.
Peterka Has Already Delivered One Memorable Bruins Moment
Peterka's biggest moment came Friday against the Winnipeg Jets. With Boston trailing late in regulation, Elias Lindholm scored the tying goal before Peterka delivered the winner in overtime. David Pastrnak created the opportunity with a pass that sent Peterka toward the net. The goal was Peterka's first career overtime winner. It also demonstrated exactly why Boston wanted to add his speed and finishing ability.
Peterka has looked comfortable playing alongside Pastrnak, giving the Bruins another dangerous offensive weapon. But Boston needs more from its established stars. The Bruins have scored only two goals across their last two games, both losses.
Pastrnak and Morgan Geekie have yet to score this season after combining for 68 goals during the 2025-26 campaign. Boston's power play also has struggled, opening the season without a goal in 10 opportunities. Those numbers are becoming difficult to ignore.

Bruins Need A Response Against Peterka's Former Team
The Mammoth arrive in Boston with a 3-1 record. Utah defeated New Jersey 5-3 on Tuesday, with Nick Schmaltz scoring twice and adding an assist. The Mammoth have demonstrated enough offensive ability to make Thursday's matchup particularly challenging.
Boston, meanwhile, is attempting to recover from Monday's 4-1 loss to Ottawa. Coach Marco Sturm made adjustments during Wednesday's practice, reuniting Pastrnak, Pavel Zacha and Geekie on the top line. The Bruins are looking for combinations capable of generating more consistent scoring chances.
Peterka's reunion with Utah adds another layer to the matchup. There is no indication that the forward holds any resentment toward his former team. Nevertheless, players generally welcome opportunities to demonstrate their value against organizations that traded them.
Peterka already has made a favorable first impression in Boston. Another big performance Thursday would be especially satisfying. More importantly, it could help the Bruins avoid a third consecutive loss.
For a team still establishing its identity, that matters considerably more than any personal reunion.
