The Boston Bruins will have a new backup goaltender next season.
They started July 1 by reshaping the crease. Shortly after signing Luke Cavallin to a one-year, two-way deal, Don Sweeney traded Joonas Korpisalo to the New York Rangers in exchange for 23-year-old forward Kalle Vaisanen and a 2028 fourth-round pick.
Vaisanen, a fourth-round pick in the 2021 NHL draft, has skated in 54 games with the Hartford Wolf Pack over the last two seasons. He finished the 2025-26 season with four points (3-1–4) in 51 games and closed with a minus-12 rating.
The native of Kotka, Finland, has also played three seasons with Liiga's TPS Turku (Finland), and he spent time in TPS's U18 and U20 systems. During the 2024-25 season, he was loaned to Ilves and finished with nine points (5-4–9) in 48 games.
He has represented Finland at the 2022 and 2023 IIHF World Junior Championships.
Vaisanen is 6-foot-5 and under contract through the conclusion of the 2026-27 season. He comes with an NHL cap hit of $938,333, but will likely spend his time in Providence.
Korpisalo, 32, has spent the last two seasons in Boston after being acquired in the Linus Ullmark trade . He made 52 starts, pitching a 25-19-9 record, 3.03 goals against average, and an .894 save percentage. His workload increased in the 2025-26 season, with 28 starts and 31 appearances, and he finished the season going 8-1-6.
The 6-foot-4 goaltender also represented Finland at the 2026 Winter Olympics and 2026 IIHF World Championships, but only played in two games in the latter tournament.
The Bruins are not retaining any salary on Korpisalo's contract. He carried a $3 million cap hit in Boston, and the Rangers are taking on all $3 million.
The Bruins have $10,715,417 of salary cap space to work with, and now have an eighth draft pick in 2028.
