Major League Baseball could be heading toward another major labor battle, and Philadelphia Phillies superstar Bryce Harper has added to the growing concern surrounding the sport's future.
With the current collective bargaining agreement set to expire after the 2026 season, questions about a potential lockout have become increasingly difficult to ignore. Harper recently fueled that conversation with a viral social media response that left baseball fans wondering what could happen in 2027.

When a fan joked that March through October could become the offseason, Harper responded, "It will be this year." Although the comment may have been intended as a joke, it quickly attracted attention and sparked discussion about the possibility of a prolonged MLB work stoppage.
MLB Faces an Uncertain Future
The biggest concern is what could happen when the league's current labor agreement expires. MLB owners and the players' union will need to negotiate a new agreement, and disagreements over economic issues could create significant problems.
A lockout would potentially prevent players from participating in team activities and could threaten the start of the 2027 season if negotiations become prolonged.

Baseball fans have already experienced the frustration of labor disputes. The 2021-22 lockout lasted 99 days and delayed the beginning of spring training.
Nobody wants to see another situation that puts games in jeopardy, especially after the sport has continued working to grow its popularity.
Harper's Comments Add to the Concern
Harper is one of baseball's biggest stars, making his comments particularly noticeable. As a prominent player and former National League MVP, his perspective carries weight with fans who are closely following the negotiations.
However, his response does not confirm that a lockout will happen or that games will be canceled.
