- Bucs depth pieces in tight end group have another chance in 2026
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers took a patient approach to the tight end position this offseason.
Despite a clear need for additional depth behind starter Cade Otton, who got paid $30 million over three years in a new contract to lock him in as the feature TE, the Bucs waited until their final pick in the 2026 NFL Draft to address the position and opted not to sign a tight end in free agency. Instead of making a splash, Tampa Bay appears set to lean into internal development, with a closer evaluation looming for Payne Durham and Devin Culp.

Otton remains the unquestioned TE1 after another steady season, continuing to provide reliability as both a pass-catcher and blocker. However, the lack of proven production behind him leaves the door open for competition and opportunity. Durham brings a physical presence and toughness.
While he may not offer elite athletic upside, his consistency and willingness to handle the dirty work could give him an opportunity to see the field.
Culp, meanwhile, represents more of a developmental upside play. The Washington product flashed as a receiving threat in college, showing the ability to stretch the seam and create mismatches against linebackers and safeties. Though he remains a work in progress as a blocker, his skill set offers something different to Tampa Bay's offense, particularly a vertical element from the tight end position that has been largely absent.
By holding off on major additions, the Buccaneers have created a clear competition heading into training camp. Both Durham and Culp will have a chance to carve out roles behind Otton, with the coaching staff likely prioritizing reliability, versatility, and effort.

It may not have been the expected approach, but it's one that reflects confidence in the player's ability to grow into their potential and sets the stage for a quietly important position battle this summer.
