- Bucs can no longer ignore Riley Dixon's poor performance
At what point does patience become negligence? That question needs to be directed toward their continued commitment to punter Riley Dixon. What was supposed to be a reliable veteran presence on special teams has instead become another recurring problem for a team that can hardly afford to create additional disadvantages for itself.Sunday's performance only added to the frustration, with Dixon delivering a disastrous 28-yard punt. For a team struggling to establish consistency, giving opposing offenses favorable field position because of an ineffective punt is unacceptable. More importantly, this is no longer an isolated incident that can be dismissed as a single bad kick.Earlier this season against Dallas, Dixon recorded two punts of just 38 yards apiece, with his longest traveling only 43 yards. Now, another short punt has brought the same concerns back into focus. How many opportunities does a veteran need before the coaching staff acknowledges that the position is becoming a liability?
The problem is bigger than one ugly punt. Against Green Bay, Dixon averaged just 40 yards on four attempts, with a net average of 35.2 yards. Against Pittsburgh, he punted six times for a 40.8-yard average without placing a single punt inside the 20-yard line. Across those two games, Tampa Bay gained almost no meaningful field-position advantage from its punting unit.Consider the situation surrounding Sunday's 28-yard punt. Tampa Bay was already backed up at its own 16-yard line following a sack of Jalon Daniels. Dixon's punt traveled only to the Buccaneers ' 44, immediately handing Pittsburgh possession in Tampa Bay territory. That is precisely when a veteran punter is supposed to help his defense, not force it Dixon is not responsible for Tampa Bay's 1-5 record, but that cannot become an excuse to ignore his performance. The Buccaneers exercised his contract option for 2026 because they believed he offered reliability. After six weeks, that decision deserves serious reconsideration.Tampa Bay should be bringing in punters for workouts immediately. Competition does not guarantee an upgrade, but refusing to explore alternatives while the same problems continue sends the wrong message about accountability.Todd Bowles has repeatedly emphasized the need for better execution, yet that standard has to extend beyond the offense and defense. If poor performances are supposed to have consequences, special teams cannot be exempt. At some point, enough is enough. Dixon has had opportunities to establish consistency, and the Buccaneers have received too many costly reminders of why field position matters. The organization does not owe him another month of unquestioned job security simply because he is a veteran. The Buccaneers need to find out whether someone else can do the job better.
