Very few names in basketball history can even be put in the same conversation as Michael Jordan . After all, we are talking about the man many consider the absolute best to ever do it, not just in basketball, but in sports history in general. Six championships, five MVP awards, and a million broken opponents are just part of the legacy Jordan built during his time with the Chicago Bulls .
Naturally, younger generations often look at him as the standard they one day hope to get close to. And because of that, most prospects avoid any sort of comparison and stay far away from putting themselves in that conversation. However, that wasn't the case for newly drafted Bulls rookie Caleb Wilson.
"I write my own story, man, honestly. I want to be… I wanna be better than Mike," Wilson, who was selected with the No. 4 pick in the first round of the recently concluded 2026 NBA Draft, said quite convincingly.
The road is the same
There is one thing: having confidence in your abilities, and there is a whole different thing saying that you want to top the GOAT. Wilson is definitely walking that fine line.
The former North Carolina product recently opened up about his ambitions, and it is safe to say, he isn't lacking confidence despite not having played an official NBA game yet.
Through history, there has always been a special connection between North Carolina and the franchise from the Windy City. Of course, Michael made that pipeline iconic, going from a Tar Heel star to the face of the entire sport while wearing that legendary No. 23 jersey.
Now, Wilson is trying to walk the same road, just with his own twist to it.
"I know that's a lot to go, but I write my own story, for sure. I feel like there is a great pipeline from UNC to the Bulls. And I'm just ready to keep it going," the youngster added.
The expectations are high for Wilson
Looking strictly at what he did in college, it is easy to understand why the Bulls were willing to invest such a high pick in Wilson. During his lone season at North Carolina, he averaged 19.8 points, 9.4 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 1.5 steals and 1.4 blocks while shooting 57.8% from the field in 24 starts.
The Bulls got themselves a real prospect. In a draft stacked with names such as AJ Dybantsa, Darryn Peterson and Cameron Boozer going ahead of him, an athletically gifted forward with plenty of upside was a logical selection for a franchise still trying to find its footing long after Jordan's era came to an end.
Wilson is only 19 years old, and with that kind of confidence already in place, all that remains is to see how far his game can take him. Maybe surpassing the GOAT is a bit too much to ask.
But if he can capture even a fraction of that competitive nature, the sky is definitely the limit.
