We officially arrive at a significant milestone in the next installment of our Get German Football NewsBundesliga 2026/27 tactical previews. FSV Mainz 05 brings us up to one-third of the field covered. As we mark this occasion, we genuinely couldn't have picked a more interesting club to cover. Over the course of the summer, Mainz have become the darlings of the German footballing press. Everyone lauds the excellent work of Urs Fischer in helping this team beat the drop last season. The summer 2026 transfer class tops the list of many a German footballing publication rating the work done in-between seasons. On paper and throughout the pre-season, everything seems to be perfect.

Will it all come together once meaningful competitive play starts? That's the intriguing question this writer spent an inordinate amount of time putting way too much thought into. As we'll observe below, all the hype surrounding this team remains mostly deserved. Do bear in mind that we're discussing only unofficial matches here. Fischer has still done a bang-up job. Bo Henriksen and his engaging "Rumpelstiltskin dance" may sadly be gone. Fischer nevertheless proves himself capable (once again) of truly being able to spin straw into gold. The "carnival club" lost a colorful personality, yet retains an identity.

1. FSV Mainz 05

What surprises most as pertains to this team involves the fact that Fischer's football isn't the same wearisome, low-block junk associated with his Union days. Upon embarking on this project, one expected to observe a team geared towards absorbing pressure rather than creating it. The Mainz we witnessed late last season certainly displayed a focus on minimizing defensive lapses and keeping it simple by focusing on clarity and rhythm. The back three became a back five. Occasionally, one divined a genuine back seven.

What do we have here? Quite the unanticipated find. Fischer's new team appears unconcerned with parking the proverbial bus. A new sense of axis-specific discipline is certainly apparent, but this team commits defensive errors all the time. They aren't afraid to take risks and can be simply fun to watch. One finds some real joy in a totally unforeseen place here. Something expected to be torturous and horribly boring actually ends up costing one most of the weekend.

The "new Mainz" leaves one feeling as if one is watching some bone-crushing sport like American football without the insanely irritating television timeouts. It's like heading to German carnival and suddenly discovering that some Germans actually know how to meet minimum dancing standards. The spirit of Rumpelstiltskin may not live in Fischer's demeanor, but the team dances around the pitch with the vim and vigor of ten little "Henriksen clones". Perhaps the fallen Dane left something important in place after all.

Or, perhaps this club just has great managerial leadership in place.

Major personnel shifts, Mainz 05

Estimated Summer Transfer Balance = +€1.2m

Our first analytical section must begin with a move that has nothing to do with departures and arrivals of players. Nadiem Amiri's decision to remain counts as colossal news. Wow. Few of us saw that coming. Sporting CEO Christian Heidel and sporting director Niko Bungert pulled off a small miracle there. Amiri himself seemed determined to head towards greener pastures just 48 hours before his emotional announcement in front of club supporters at a fan event. On the topic of major coups, the FSV administrative team pulling off the permanent Stefan Posch purchase capped a monumental summer. Heidel and Bungert are like little mini-deities. If they've done something wrong this summer, the author must have missed it.

Mainz possess a transfer surplus thanks to the fact that some promising prospects (defender Nikolas Veratschnig and striker Ben Bobzien ) were sold for a cumulative total of €4.5m. Total flop Arnaud Nordin fetched €2.2m from Stade Rennes and the well-negotiated Tom Krauß loan deal with Köln enabled a further €3.5m to flow into FSV coffers. The mega Posch purchase wouldn't have been possible without the surplus generated from such sales. Heidel and Bungert further augmented their defense with the other major summer signing, a €3.5m pickup of center back Fabio Gruber from Nürnberg.

Elsewhere on the arrival front, the amount of money it cost to purchase Silas (renegotiated after the season) and Sheraldo Becker (mid six-figure purchase clause) amounts to nothing more than chump change. Those two already proved themselves worth beyond their weight in straw-spun gold. Both attackers appear to have cost around €500,000 apiece. Japanese midfielder Sota Kawasaki , i.e. the "not quite" Kaishu Sano replacement, reportedly cost around €1m or so. Again, chicken scratch on the larger budget board. One sincerely doubts new backup keeper Alexander Schwolow cost much.

The two players signed on frees? Eric Martel (as a potential Sano replacement) and Ransford Königsdörffer (believe it or not) essentially constitute perfect new additions. Doubts about the latter? Perfectly understandable. Simply read on if you'd like to see what other miracles happened to transpire over the course of the preseason. Everything's upside down in the "bizarro world" that is the current state of this club. Urs Fischer intrigues. Germans can apparently dance a little. Mass hysteria reigns.

Notes from pre-season, Mainz 05

We've little choice but to go into greater depth with the pre-season friendlies here. The author remains as insatiably curious as everyone else when it comes to the question of whether or not this team is for real. What do we make of this streak? Will die Nullfünfter challenge for Europe again after a brief one-year hiatus? The results deserve greater scrutiny. As such, we're pleased to chronicle the full journey from Pfeddersheim to Bournemouth ; the very same Bournemouth side that glove slapped Augsburg in a separate pre-season fixture. Let's delve in!

Mainz professionals reported to work earlier than all other Bundesliga footballers. The first warm-up fixture took place on July 4th. Königsdörffer, Philipp Tietz , William Bøving, and Anthony Caci all scored lovely goals in an 11-0 rout of TSG Pfeddersheim. Eric Martel also bagged a brace. Next up, another creampuff friendly against Sportfreunde Eisbachtal enabled Tietz and Königsdörffer to score again. The (since loaned out) Nelson Weiper recorded a hat trick. Bøving picked up two crucial assists, setting up Königsdörffer's 4-0 and Tietz's 5-0 just before the break. An overall spectacular performance led to a 10-0 win.

Still fairly meaningless stuff.

Things then got more serious. With the heaviest of hearts, the author must report that the Mainzer made absolute mincemeat out of his beloved 1. FC Kaiserslautern in a July 17th friendly at the old Bruchweg stadium. Fischer's old 3-3-2-2 (familiar from the old Union days) crushed the FCK in a 4-1 win. The Pfälzer actually escaped a worse fate against their Palatinate rivals. Tietz and Sheraldo Becker effectively put the game to bed with two strikes inside of the opening ten minutes. Paul Nebel then added a penalty. Marco Richter even got into the act later on the 4-1. Yikes!

The Lautern match demonstrated that Fischer's troops absolutely weren't afraid to treat a test fixture like the real thing. After the lightning quick start that rendered the affair mostly uncompetitive, the FSV trainer left his preferred XI on the pitch until just after the hour mark. The team didn't let up against Holstein Kiel in the next test. Picking up right where they left off, the Mainzer again turned aggressive ball recoveries into immediate vertical attacks. Phillip Tietz spotted Kiel keeper Lio Rothenhagen well off his line and punished him from roughly 40 meters for the opener.

Rael Nakuzola then won the ball high up the left before Ransford Königsdörffer calmly finished off the ensuing transition for 2-0. Fischer began emptying the bench after the first of two 50-minute halves, yet the basic structure held. William Bøving eventually supplied the prettiest finish of the afternoon, delicately lifting the ball home for the 3-0. Even Marco Richter (yes, bleeding Marco Richter again!) had another goal chalked off late.

Four tests, four wins.

Now things got interesting.

The fifth victory supplied the ugly Fischer football we were waiting for. Shabab Al-Ahli largely succeeded in dragging Mainz into an ugly, low-event affair in Kufstein. Worse still, Eric Martel twisted his knee while blocking an early shot and had to leave the pitch. Mainz struggled to impose themselves thereafter, surrendering plenty of possession and several of the better chances. Robin Zentner kept the match scoreless before Andreas Hanche-Olsen finally headed home a Paul Nebel corner in the 71st minute. A 1-0 win nevertheless kept the perfect record intact.

Fischer fielded an almost entirely different side against Udinese . Kaishu Sano, Nadiem Amiri , and Jae-sung Lee all made their returns following World Cup leave. Alexander Schwolow debuted in goal. With Tietz having gone the full distance the previous day, Sheraldo Becker and Königsdörffer received the entire match together up front. Königsdörffer set Becker up inside four minutes before the Italians began taking advantage of some sloppy Mainz play. Schwolow initially made several decent saves, but messed up in two instances that enabled the Italians to take the lead.

Udinese eventually carried a 3-1 lead into the break. Mainz responded immediately. Königsdörffer again supplied Becker for the 2-3 before scoring the equalizer himself on the hour mark. Three direct goal contributions from the former HSV attacker rescued a 3-3 draw and ensured that the first blemish on the preseason record didn't actually constitute a defeat. The most impressive statement yet followed one week later against Paris FC . One quickly forgot about the "Boring Ball" predecessor.

Fischer fielded something approaching his current A-XI at the Bruchweg, with Amiri and Lee operating behind the attack. Fabio Gruber opened the scoring with a spectacular bicycle kick following an Amiri corner. Tietz then apparently decided that scoring from 40 meters should become a regular feature of his summer. Kaishu Sano pinched possession from Pierre Lees-Melou , Tietz looked up, noticed Kevin Trapp wandering, and promptly embarrassed the former German international from distance.

More importantly, the quality didn't collapse once Fischer began rotating. Nakuzola again looked perfectly comfortable on the left. Königsdörffer converted a late penalty, and Kacper Potulski capitalized on another goalkeeping error following a corner to complete the 4-0 rout. Even after a genuine substitution avalanche, Mainz maintained their shape, pressing intensity, and attacking purpose. How 'bout them apples?

The final dress rehearsal against Bournemouth then provided something of a reality check without actually spoiling the pristine summer record. The Premier League guests pressed aggressively from the outset, regularly suffocating Mainz's attempts to build out from the back. Fischer's high defensive line also looked vulnerable whenever Bournemouth successfully accelerated through the first wave. The English side should probably have taken the lead.

Instead, Robin Zentner simply bypassed the whole problem.

After collecting a cross, the Mainz keeper launched a magnificent throw over half the pitch and directly into Sheraldo Becker's path. The striker escaped the defensive line and finished calmly for the 1-0 in the 14th minute. Mainz settled thereafter and fashioned a couple more opportunities, but Bournemouth eventually began finding the gaps again. Evanilson exploited another opening in the advanced defensive line to equalize shortly before the break.

The pattern didn't improve much immediately after halftime. Bournemouth remained the more dangerous side whenever they increased the tempo. Around the hour mark, Fischer proceeded to replace the other nine outfield players as well. Once again, the "second string" didn't look much like one. Let's label it a "second sting".

Rather than collapse under the weight of the substitutions, Mainz remained competitive and eventually stole the match themselves. Otto Ruoppi found William Bøving on the edge of the area in the 78th minute and the Dane finished for the 2-1. Bournemouth still threatened another equalizer and Königsdörffer nearly added a third at the other end. Neither happened. Seven wins and one draw from eight pre-season fixtures. Not bad.

Now the creampuffs, experiments, and 100-minute curiosities are finished. VfB Krieschow await in the Pokal. Time for the real thing.

Winners from camp, Mainz 05

Philipp Tietz, CF

The previously "unseen" Mainz attacking assistant now most assuredly makes his presence felt. Tietz already proved vital to the remarkable Rückrunde rescue despite rarely furnishing the goals himself. Those watching closely observed the deep drops, hard running, coverage drawn from opposing defenders, and willingness to do the dirty work that helped elevate those around him. This summer supplied the conspicuous stuff as well. Tietz opened the scoring in each of Mainz's first four pre-season fixtures. Pfeddersheim, Eisbachtal, Kaiserslautern, and Kiel all conceded the first goal to the same man. An amusing explanation may lie on the back of his shirt. After switching from No. 20 to the traditional striker's No. 9, Tietz openly admitted that the new number furnished him with an extra dose of confidence and apologized to all Mainz fans who already bought the old jersey.

The confidence certainly shows. Tietz's outrageous effort against Kiel supplied the clearest example. He later pulled essentially the same stunt against Paris FC, embarrassing Bundesliga veteran and former German national team keeper Kevin Trapp. Now he's just showing off!! Those goals naturally draw the eye, but they shouldn't obscure what makes Tietz indispensable to Fischer's attack. Throwing himself into challenges, winning aerial duels, laying balls off, and slipping teammates through matter just as much. That's precisely the player GGFN highlighted during last season's relegation fight : a forward whose work initiating attacks and counters via deep drops could easily disappear from the stat sheet. Now the stat sheet happens to be cooperating too.

Ransford Königsdörffer, LS

Surprise! The 24-year-old has shortened his name and broadened his goal contributions. Sadly, last season limited Königsdörffer to just five of his famous "waffle parties". At least he got a chance to dive into a "double stack" at one point. In any event, one presages plenty of sweet treats for the Berlin native this season. Five goals in 33 Bundesliga appearances didn't exactly constitute a sensational first ever Bundesliga campaign, yet Königsdörffer's trainer repeatedly emphasized that Königsdörffer's value extended beyond the scoresheet. The runs, interpretation of space, hard work and ability to draw coverage all counted. His February brace against Union finally illustrated what could happen when the finishing caught up.

We might finally witness a breakthrough. The preseason evidence certainly supports that conclusion. Against Udinese, the former HSV attacker produced his most complete performance of the summer: twice supplying Sheraldo Becker before scoring the 3-3 equalizer himself. More important than the raw tally, the contributions arrived in different forms. Königsdörffer ran beyond defensive lines, slanted into channels, pressed high, finished transitions, created chances, and registered assists. The player who entered the summer looking like another useful depth addition may already have forced himself into the conversation for Fischer's first-choice attacking tandem.

Time to get the waffle iron warmed up.

Sheraldo Becker, LS

The Bundesliga does indeed suit him better . Becker made that declaration shortly after reuniting with his old Union Berlin trainer last winter. Everything we've seen since suggests the old Union connection still has plenty of life left in it. Fischer always knew exactly what to do with the Amsterdam native's ridiculous pace, direct running, and willingness to attack space. This summer, Becker struck early against Kaiserslautern and then delivered his most productive outing with that brace against Udinese.

The final Bournemouth test supplied an even cleaner demonstration of why Becker remains so valuable to this version of Mainz. Robin Zentner simply launched the ball over the Premier League press and into open space, Becker immediately torched the defensive line, and the striker calmly finished the 1-0. The goals against Lautern, Udinese, and Bournemouth get one excited. Better still, his ability to run beyond Tietz offers Fischer exactly the complementary profile the big target man needs. The Bundesliga may suit Becker better. Urs Fischer's Bundesliga apparently suits him best.

Alynho Haidara , LS

Christ, how many attackers can we fit in here? A more important question: Who in the hell is this kid? Mainz's Cote d'Ivoire academy? Mainz have a Cote d'Ivoire academy?! Indeed they do. Haidara arrives via the Jacqueville academy founded by former Mainz striker Aristide Bancé. Fischer wasted little time throwing the teenager in with the professionals and he nearly scored twice. The just-turned 18-year-old appears well ahead of schedule in his developmental path. When we'll hear from him next remains a mystery, but the author wants the mark he made documented here.

William Bøving, AM

At least we're in midfield now! From a complete and utter flop under a Danish trainer to a surprise presence under someone he had no previous connection with. Bøving looked like a total bust during his first season in Mainz: 223 Bundesliga minutes, two starts, seven substitute appearances, and just one assist across league play. This pre-season has been totally different. Bøving supplied two assists in the early rout of Eisbachtal, then produced one of Mainz's finest goals of the summer against Kiel with a clever run, excellent first touch, and delicate finish over the keeper.

He remained productive thereafter, eventually converting Otto Ruoppi's pass for the winner against Bournemouth after Fischer had emptied most of his bench. The athletic data explains part of the resurgence: Bøving possesses striking pace and has reportedly really impressed the coaching staff in summer output testing. For the first time since arriving, the player Mainz thought they signed opted to show up. There he is. Such a shame that this author simply can't seem to fit him into the tactical puzzle in a consistent way.

Otto Ruoppi, CM

Remember this kid? He actually technically arrived in Mainz last winter on transfer deadline day before immediately being loaned back out to his Finnish parent club. The record speaks for itself. Now he's back in the Bundesliga for a permanent audition. Ruoppi wasted little time this summer, scoring his first Mainz goal in the opening 11-0 rout of Pfeddersheim. The more meaningful evidence came later. Ruoppi kept earning minutes as the opposition improved and eventually supplied William Bøving for the winning goal against Bournemouth. His technical quality, mobility, and ability to connect play give Fischer yet another functional option when the first unit rotates out. The Bundesliga audition has begun rather well.

Can he "Finnish"?

Pre-season suggests the answer might be "Yes!"

Rael Nakuzola, CB

This unknown deserves his own section. Nakuzola began the summer as little more than a U23 curiosity and ended it forcing himself into perhaps the most ridiculous positional battle anywhere on the Mainz roster. Fischer trusted the youngster alongside established professionals early, then kept feeding him serious minutes as the opposition improved. Against Kiel, Nakuzola's aggressive recovery high on the left directly created Königsdörffer's 2-0; against Paris FC, he again looked entirely comfortable after entering a heavily rotated side.

None of this means he's suddenly jumped Andreas Hanche-Olsen, who returned in excellent shape and spent the summer fighting aggressively to regain ground, or Kacper Potulski, an 18-year-old senior Poland international already carrying Bundesliga and European experience. That's precisely what makes Nakuzola's camp so impressive. Throw Fabio Gruber, Kohr , da Costa , Bell, and now presumed defensive leader Stefan Posch into the same three-position queue and the whole thing becomes faintly absurd. Nakuzola hasn't won a starting job. He's done something almost as difficult: made it impossible to dismiss him from the conversation.

Losers from camp, Mainz 05

Benedict Hollerbach , LS

Will there be any space for him when he gets back from injury? One sincerely wonders if either Hollerbach or Nelson Weiper have a future at this club. The two higher-profile German names who were supposed to form the face of this attack last season may never don the carnival club colors again. Hollerbach's torn Achilles naturally renders any judgment on his own summer grossly unfair. Hollerbach hasn't lost his place through poor performance. The depth chart simply kept moving while he stood still. Nor is he the only recognizable name left staring at a significantly altered hierarchy.

Paul Nebel scored against Kaiserslautern and obviously remains too talented to disappear from consideration, yet even the Germany U21 international no longer looks guaranteed to occupy one of the two attacking slots behind Fischer's forwards. Now Amiri has stayed, Lee remains trusted, Bøving has enjoyed a superb preparation, and the sheer number of viable striker combinations creates still more pressure farther forward. Nebel hasn't endured a bad preseason. He simply appears to have gone from automatic centerpiece to someone who may have to fight for every start and may prefer to leave on an expiring deal.

Then there's Silas. Mainz admirably stood by him after the horrific tibia-and-fibula fracture and arranged a new contract rather than leaving the Congolese attacker stranded during rehabilitation. His quality before the injury isn't really in question either. Unfortunately, the same cruel arithmetic applies. Silas missed the entire summer while Fischer discovered new combinations that worked extremely well without him.

By the time both he and Hollerbach are fully operational again, Tietz, Königsdörffer, Becker and perhaps even Haidara may have spent months defining the attacking rotation. Bøving and Ruoppi further crowd the spaces behind them. Somehow, there are as many attacking "losers" on this team as there are "winners". At least the author was sane enough to craft an "amalgam" section this time.

Eric Martel, CM

Not that there's ever a good time to incur injury, but this one particularly smarts. The former Germany U21 captain was off to a good start. Martel scored twice in the opening rout of Pfeddersheim and appeared well on his way toward establishing himself as the primary alternative to Sano in midfield before twisting his knee while blocking a shot against Shabab Al-Ahli. The timing couldn't have been much worse. Mainz suddenly have Kawasaki settling in, Ruoppi forcing his way into the conversation, and no shortage of ways to rearrange the midfield around Amiri, Sano, and Lee. At least he doesn't have to worry about Lennard Maloney replacing him!

Stefan Bell, CB

The time may have finally come to close the book on this player's inspiring story. Bell has survived enough supposed succession plans over the years that writing him off remains hazardous, but this particular depth chart looks brutal even by his standards. Posch arrives as the presumed defensive leader, Kohr and da Costa carried strong standing out of last season, Hanche-Olsen returned fit, Gruber cost real money, Potulski needs developmental minutes, and Nakuzola somehow forced his way into the discussion as well. The man whom Bo Svensson once famously dubbed "nine-lived" may finally have crossed the famous "cat threshold". Hopefully, he doesn't wander off into the woods one afternoon and never come back.

Alexander Schwolow, GK

Meh. Let's just focus on how nice it is to have Schwoli back. His actual preseason audition sucked horribly, but who really cares? Schwolow made several respectable saves against Udinese, only to undo much of the good work with two costly mistakes as the Italians built their 3-1 halftime lead. Robin Zentner's status was never seriously under threat anyway, so we're hardly discussing some dramatic goalkeeping controversy. Schwolow came back to Mainz to supply experienced Bundesliga cover, not seize the No. 1 shirt. Still, if one insists upon finding losers in such an overwhelmingly positive summer, a backup keeper whose most meaningful test featured two conspicuous errors writes himself onto the list. The author doesn't even want to craft another joke.

Tactical Scout, Mainz 05

The point arrives at which we have to string it all together, something the author has actually been deliberately avoiding for most of the day and into the early evening. There are some honestly tough personnel calls to make here. Moreover, the question posed way back at the beginning of the article doesn't lend itself to an easy answer. The new "Fischerball" – as Bournemouth demonstrated – can be hacked by opponents capable of exploiting the soft center. Long-time Bundesliga beat reporters know how bad the old "Fischerball" can get. This new incarnation can implode too.

Fischer usually sticks to his guns. We'll assume the 3-3-2-2 remains in place and further assume that Kaishu Sano will be milked for all that he's worth before a potential sale is completed. That leaves us with an easily inferable lineup from the back three upwards. Fischer is essentially projected to keep the top seven footballers from the Bournemouth XI in place. Why not? The system works. Tietz is the reference point. Becker supplies depth. Amiri and Lee work the half-spaces. Caci and Mwene function as narrow wingbacks capable of improvisationally joining the charge when necessary.

Lineup–M05 (PROJECTED)

The back three is where matters get more interesting, if not confusing to the point of a bona fide carnival hangover. The author tips just one change. Stefan Posch takes over for the often error-prone Danny da Costa while Fabio Gruber shifts right. Posch can step forward as the vertical pivot runner axially chained to Sano, giving Mainz another means of stretching the build-up through the middle. Beyond that, Fischer possesses an almost ridiculous number of permutations. Thankfully, we've gone through the defensive queue enough in this piece already!

Clear as mud? Good. At least the broader conclusions prove easier to draw. Can this team challenge for the Conference League? Absolutely. A seventh-place finish feels like the ceiling if Sano stays. More importantly, the potency of the "second sting" applies at both ends of the pitch. Königsdörffer can change the attack without weakening it. Bøving and Ruoppi are fine rotation options, versatile ones at that. The defensive alternatives are almost comically plentiful. This isn't merely a strong starting XI. Nothing he's changed has stopped the damn thing from working.

The caveat remains Bournemouth. Mainz struggled when an opponent successfully locked onto the build-up, bypassed the first pressure, and attacked the space behind the advanced defensive line. Bundesliga opponents will notice. Better ones will exploit it. That's why one hesitates to proclaim the whole thing the "real deal" on the basis of an unbeaten summer alone. Three or four convincing competitive performances should tell us considerably more.

For now?

The hype is mostly right.

Let's play already!
