SC Freiburg attacking midfielder Yuito Suzuki signed off for the international break in appropriate fashion. The 24-year-old's superb first-time finish rescued a 2-2 draw away at Eintracht Frankfurt and preserved his side's unbeaten Bundesliga start. Suzuki already has four league goals this season, matching the total he required 25 appearances to reach last year.
The finishing surge attracts attention for obvious reasons. Suzuki's broader development makes the numbers even more interesting.
Those keeping close tabs on Suzuki since his €7m-plus move from Brøndby IF last summer will recall that things did not begin smoothly. The Japanese international started Freiburg's first two league fixtures, looked decidedly ill-equipped for the physical demands of the Bundesliga, and subsequently received only two brief substitute deployments through Matchday 10.
By the winter, Suzuki's improving ability to cope with Bundesliga physicality had become one of the more interesting Freiburg development stories . The extra work paid off. Suzuki established himself as a regular from mid-November onward and finished his maiden SCF campaign with nine goals and seven assists across all competitions.
The technical quality was never terribly difficult to spot. Suzuki demonstrated immense calm amid heavy traffic in Freiburg's 5-1 Europa League win over Genk , scoring himself before setting up Maximilian Eggestein. By spring, the 1.75-meter attacker was an important piece of Julian Schuster's side.
A broken collarbone suffered against Wolfsburg on Matchday 32 brought an unfortunate premature end to that progress. Suzuki missed Freiburg's Europa League Final defeat to Aston Villa and subsequently played only 12 minutes for Japan at the World Cup.
He apparently returned determined to make up for lost time. Suzuki required 778 Bundesliga minutes and 13 appearances to score his first three league goals last season. This year, a hat-trick against Werder Bremen on opening day took all of 55 minutes.
Not bad.
The silk was always there. Suzuki arrived in Freiburg with the touch, close control and technical imagination expected of a creative No. 10. The steel has taken a little longer. Perhaps appropriately for a Japanese international, the two materials have some history together: traditional Japanese armour married rigid iron plates with silk lacing. Suzuki's own version of the combination now involves considerably more physical courage, defensive work and willingness to contest balls that scarcely look designed for a 1.75-meter attacker.
Even one of those three goals spoke to the less obvious part of Suzuki's development. Bremen understandably focused their attention on 1.94-meter Igor Matanovic and 1.89-meter Matthias Ginter at a corner. The 1.75-meter Suzuki instead rose above the crowd and headed home.
His aerial-duel success rate has risen from 30 percent last season to 50 percent this year. Suzuki still wins only 36 percent of his duels overall, but one need only watch how fearlessly the 70-kilogram attacker engaged Nnamdi Collins in Frankfurt to see that the numbers don't tell the whole story.
That notwithstanding, the passing and finishing numbers aren't bad either.
Suzuki has improved his pass completion rate from 78 to 89 percent. His goals-per-xG rate has risen from 1.04 to 1.54. His top speed of 35.5 km/h also happens to exceed that of departed Freiburg star Johan Manzambi.
The Manzambi comparison requires some care. They aren't the same type of player and generally don't work in the same areas of the pitch. Manzambi often supplied the aggressive element of Freiburg's double-six last year while Suzuki buzzed about in tighter spaces further forward.
Freiburg distributed Manzambi's responsibilities across several players following the Swiss international's club-record move to Aston Villa. Suzuki's part of the bargain involved carrying more of the creative burden.
Thus far, he's carried it rather well.
Schuster doesn't consider Suzuki's improved finishing to be some early-season statistical accident. The Freiburg trainer sees the difference every day.
"Last year he maybe scored three out of ten, now we're already at seven out of ten," Schuster recently explained. "If you improve like that, you can go into actions with courage, and that is reflected in the execution."
Suzuki's four goals are complemented by an increasingly refined understanding with Matanovic. The pair combined beautifully for the final goal of the Bremen win, with Suzuki releasing his striker before continuing his run to receive the return ball.
"You can notice now how Yuito and I connect very, very well up front," Matanovic said afterwards. "By now we have a blind understanding with each other."
Matanovic specifically noted that Suzuki kept making the run despite the striker being clean through on goal. Suzuki knew where the space would open. Matanovic knew Suzuki would attack it.
The 2026/27 version of Freiburg – 10 points and 12 goals through four league fixtures – has thus far supplied its attackers with plenty of opportunities to show off such automatisms. Suzuki can receive centrally and turn toward the defensive line, play the connector underneath Matanovic, release runners himself or become the runner.
Even that doesn't fully explain why Schuster appears so pleased with him.
"Yuito now implements an incredible amount of what we need for our game against the ball," the SCF trainer noted. "He has internalized that this is also important for an attacking artist like him."
There's the most Freiburg part of the story.
Goals, through-balls and silky touches will naturally earn Suzuki the headlines. Tracking back, challenging much larger opponents and embracing the dirty work are what allow him to remain on the pitch long enough to produce them.
Suzuki himself still doesn't appear particularly interested in talking himself up. After his hat-trick against Bremen, his first response to praise from a Japanese reporter was to complain about his own first-half mistakes.
"Of course I was frustrated," Suzuki also said of his limited World Cup role this summer, "but my football career goes on. It was a tournament that made me realize that I still have a lot of work ahead of me."
Apparently, he got to work. Freiburg now have a quicker, stronger, more efficient version of the player who already emerged as a key attacker last spring.
As the Japanese international's estimated market value continues to rise – now up to €28m in the latest Transfermarktupdate – Suzuki increasingly looks like Freiburg's next potentially lucrative international-market asset following Johan Manzambi's club-record departure.
